Health experts remind everyone to pay close attention to their physical condition. If any abnormalities arise, seek timely treatment and care. Experts explain that our bodies are composed of 70% water. When water cannot be properly metabolized, it leads to edema. What causes edema? Edema can be localized or systemic. What are the symptoms of edema? Pregnant women are also prone to edema. How should pregnant women manage edema?
Causes of Edema
1. Edema can be localized or systemic. Systemic edema may present with symptoms like pleural effusion, pericardial effusion, or ascites. This type is often associated with geriatric edema, drug-induced edema, malnutrition-related edema, or renal/cardiac edema. These conditions typically stem from underlying diseases and pose significant health risks.
2. Edema severity is categorized as mild, moderate, or severe. Mild edema affects the soft tissues around the eyelids and under the eye sockets, showing slight indentations upon pressure and causing approximately 5% weight gain.
3. Moderate edema commonly affects loose tissues throughout the body. Upon pressure, these tissues exhibit noticeable or deeper indentations that recover slowly.
4. Severe edema affects all body tissues. The skin may appear taut and shiny, with some cases showing fluid leakage. This condition may also be accompanied by fluid accumulation in the chest cavity, scrotum, or abdominal cavity.
Symptoms of Edema
(1) Cardiac Edema: Edema may occur during right-sided heart failure in various cardiac conditions. It initially appears in lower body regions like the lower limbs, buttocks, and back, potentially progressing to generalized edema in severe cases.
(2) Renal Edema: Conditions such as glomerulonephritis and nephrotic syndrome can cause edema.Edema initially manifests in loose tissues like eyelids and facial areas, progressing to generalized edema in severe cases, and may involve pleural effusion or ascites. (3) Hepatic Edema: Occurs in conditions like cirrhosis due to portal hypertension or hypoalbuminemia from hepatic insufficiency. Characterized by gradual onset, it typically presents primarily as ascites with mild generalized edema, most pronounced in the lower extremities.
(IV) Malnutrition-related Edema: Primarily caused by reduced intravascular colloid osmotic pressure due to hypoalbuminemia. Commonly occurs in conditions of inadequate nutrition, intestinal malabsorption, or chronic wasting diseases. Additionally, vitamin B1 deficiency may contribute as an additional factor.
(V) Idiopathic Edema: More common in women, with edema appearing on eyelids and lower limbs. Causes include:
1. In some patients, insufficient sympathetic nervous system activation during upright posture leads to cerebral hypoperfusion. This triggers a baroreceptor reflex, increasing aldosterone secretion. Often accompanied by other symptoms of neurasthenia.
2. Some women experience it 7-14 days before menstruation, which subsides after menstruation begins. This may be related to hormonal dysfunction.
(VI) Other causes: Edema due to connective tissue disorders (scleroderma, dermatomyositis); drug-induced edema (corticosteroids, licorice, etc.); endocrine-related edema (e.g., myxedema).
Managing Edema During Pregnancy
1. Rest
Pregnant women are prone to edema. During this time, expectant mothers should prioritize rest, avoid excessive fatigue, and refrain from prolonged standing or walking. Mild swelling may be alleviated through daytime rest, and elevating the lower limbs can also help. Resting in a left-side lying position can effectively reduce swelling. Localized massage may also provide relief.Walking helps regulate calf muscles and alleviates venous compression. Prenatal exercise routines are also beneficial.
3. Diet
Pregnant women must ensure adequate daily nutrition by consuming animal-based foods and legumes. These foods are rich in high-quality protein. Women with anemia should particularly focus on iron supplementation, as anemia and malnutrition are contributing factors to pregnancy edema.Additionally, ensure a variety of vitamins and minerals by eating plenty of vegetables and fruits.
Furthermore, pregnancy edema is not caused by excessive water intake but rather by uterine pressure or water retention due to excessive salt consumption. Therefore, expectant mothers should still drink water in moderation.
4. Clothing
Wearing tight clothing can impede blood circulation, leading to body swelling. Therefore, expectant mothers should avoid overly tight clothing during pregnancy. When selecting shoes, choose styles that comfortably accommodate swollen feet. Avoid socks with elastic bands that constrict the ankles and calves. That concludes today's discussion on edema. Do you now have a clearer understanding of its causes? The human body is largely composed of water. However, when water cannot be properly metabolized, it leads to edema, which poses significant health risks. The causes of edema discussed above aim to enhance your understanding of this condition. Pregnant women are particularly prone to edema. When experiencing swelling, it is crucial to rest adequately, ensure proper nutrition, and avoid wearing overly tight clothing.
