When during the day do you feel most sluggish? The answer varies from person to person. Some feel sluggish from the moment they wake up, drifting through the day in a haze. Others experience peak mental activity in the morning, only for their stomachs to start rumbling loudly around lunchtime. For many, the drowsiness hits in the afternoon—a quick nap at your desk under the boss's watchful eye feels like pure luxury. So what methods can boost daily efficiency?
Fatigue and drowsiness are linked to individual sleep patterns, metabolism, work and life pressures, and the body's natural circadian rhythms. To combat the ever-looming threat of drowsiness, most office workers adopt a reactive approach: brewing coffee or strong tea for a quick pick-me-up, lighting a cigarette, snacking, or simply taking a quick nap.
Get Morning Sunlight Regularly
Weekends finally break the nine-to-five routine, offering the chance to sleep in as long as desired. However, this approach doesn't necessarily eliminate fatigue—it may even leave you with aching muscles and a stiff back.
Recent research reveals that the human biological clock adjusts based on exposure to sunlight. The hypothalamus houses a master clock that regulates biological rhythms, synchronized with the 24-hour day. Without sufficient sunlight, sleep cycles lengthen by an average of 12 minutes daily. Your body then operates on a 24.2-hour cycle. To maintain your original rhythm, you should sleep in slightly longer. If you stick to your usual wake-up time despite this shift, you'll feel exhausted. Therefore, you should maintain a stable biological rhythm. Even on weekends, avoid oversleeping. Wake up at your usual workday time, then take a half-hour walk outdoors or sit by a sunny window while eating breakfast. Drink coffee only when you feel sleepy A morning cup of coffee or strong tea can perk you up.This is true, but consuming such stimulants in the morning is often wasted. Caffeine works by inhibiting a brain chemical that induces sleepiness, keeping you alert. In the morning, when you're just waking up and often feel fairly energetic, coffee doesn't have a significant effect. However, by the afternoon when you start feeling drowsy, that's when coffee's benefits become apparent. To effectively use coffee for alertness, you can drink it anytime during the day when you feel tired, but keep the amount moderate—about half to one teaspoon—so it doesn't interfere with your sleep at night. Increase Protein Intake We often believe that to maintain sufficient energy, we need to eat more carbohydrates. However, recent scientific research challenges this notion, suggesting people limit carbohydrate intake. While carbohydrates provide quick bursts of energy, excessive consumption requires significant energy to digest. Women who reduce carbohydrates and increase protein in their diet tend to feel more energetic.A healthy daily carbohydrate intake should be kept below 150 grams. You can structure your meals with the following proportions: 50% vegetables, 20% fruit, and 30-40% carbohydrates (preferably whole grains). For example, breakfast could include one slice of bread or half an English muffin, one slice each of ham and cheese, plus one egg and a cup of milk. For lunch, include a small portion of carbohydrates alongside 80 grams of meat and some dairy products. At dinner, lean meat should constitute about 60% of your meal, with the remainder filled by vegetables and fruits. Keep carbohydrates to a minimum.
