In workplace interactions, everyone plays the role of a "shared slipper" and "locker" because interpersonal relationships are inherently open-access. First, consider these intriguing observations: When climbing out of the pool, people instinctively search for their own slippers. If they can't find them, most will simply grab any pair and walk away.
In contrast, some people emerge from the pool exclaiming, "Oh no, where are my slippers?" After searching in vain, they finally ask a staff member to fetch another pair.
Having to deal with this multiple times daily, the staff naturally grow impatient; swimmers also become annoyed: "Who has such poor manners, just grabbing someone else's slippers..."
By lunchtime, when the crowd disperses, several pairs of flip-flops are invariably left behind, abandoned and unclaimed.
It's a curious phenomenon: on the surface, those who break the rules always seem to have flip-flops to wear, while those who follow the rules often can't find their own shoes. Let's call this the "public flip-flop" phenomenon.
How could this be? Why exactly?
Many would immediately cry foul. Yet most overlook this fundamental premise:
The hotel pool is inherently a public space. The hotel's original intent in providing slippers was to ensure everyone has slippers to wear, not to guarantee everyone has their own exclusive pair.
Those who "nitpick" may overlook this fact: every pair of slippers neatly arranged in the locker room essentially shares a "public nature." They simply move from locker 007 today to locker 108 tomorrow.
Thus, those who casually slip on any available slipper and proceed—their unintentional "tolerance for error" (or "lack of fussiness")—unwittingly align with the hotel's original intent. Conversely, those who fixate on "exclusivity" overemphasize this trait while overlooking the slippers' communal nature. Consequently, they end up at a disadvantage and are unwelcome.
We call this phenomenon—where tolerance levels in open public spaces profoundly impact individual survival and development—the "Public Slippers" effect. This effect extends beyond poolside settings, applying equally to interpersonal relationships.
Within social networks, each person serves as both "public slippers" and "lockers" for others.Last week, when you met up with your college dorm mates, they were the slippers in your locker #111. This week, when you dined with your coworkers, they were the slippers in your locker #168. Next week, when you meet up with online friends visiting from Hangzhou, they will be the slippers in your locker #258. The reverse is also true—you are a pair of slippers in their locker #888.
This analogy holds because most people maintain open attributes within their social networks. The greater your tolerance for diversity (or "inclusivity"), the more you engage with varied groups—the proverbial "all walks of life"—and the more open your social web becomes. Consequently, you'll find slippers waiting for you everywhere, eliminating the awkwardness of searching barefoot for footwear.
From a game theory perspective, as a structure of long-term, repeated interactions, individuals who function as "public slippers" in interpersonal relationships are more favored by their counterparts.
Consider this example:
A and B, and A and C, are both in long-term, repeated-game relationships. (If unfamiliar with game theory, think of it simply as "transactions.")
B's tolerance score for A is 70, while C's tolerance score for A is 90. A's tolerance score for both B and C is 100. (Maximum score: 100)
Each time they interact, A must sacrifice 30% of their distinctiveness to accommodate B; similarly, A only needs to sacrifice 10% of their distinctiveness to accommodate C.
As the number of game rounds increases, A must sacrifice proportionally more of its distinctiveness to accommodate B (sacrificing 30% each round, leaving a remaining distinctiveness of 70% raised to the power of N).Over time, the divergence between A and B diminishes significantly (after 10 transactions, 0.7^10 is approximately 0.02825, meaning divergence falls below 3%). The smaller the divergence, the weaker the motivation for either party to engage in subsequent games (or "transactions"). Eventually, repeated games cease to exist.
Since this outcome is foreseeable, in interpersonal relationships, if one party has low tolerance for error, their development and choices become constrained from the opponent's perspective. This may lead to greater potential losses, making the opponent reluctant to engage in transactions or interactions with the low-tolerance party. Over time, the low-tolerance individual gradually becomes distanced and isolated in social circles, ultimately leading to social difficulties.
How can one increase their tolerance for error? I never found a good answer until one day, chatting with my son in kindergarten. He said the most popular kids make friends like this:
1. I'm friends with you, so I'll be friends with her (him) too;
2. If you're willing to be friends with her (him), then I'll be even nicer to you!
