In daily life, we often hear the term "sensitive skin." What exactly constitutes true skin sensitivity? Is it simply a red rash? To address this, Public Health Network interviewed Director Hu Kuikui from the Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics Center at Guangdong Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital. Skin sensitivity is a common form of allergy "From a medical perspective, skin sensitivity is a relatively common form of allergy. Approximately 20% of people in our surroundings experience skin allergies."Director Hu Kuihui explained to our editor that when an individual experiences skin allergies, their skin may exhibit abnormal symptoms such as redness, swelling, itching, pain, erythema, peeling, or allergic dermatitis.
"Additionally, patients may feel itching, stinging, burning sensations, or tightness."Director Hu Kui Kui noted that the severity of these symptoms varies depending on the degree of skin sensitivity.
Skin Sensitivity Resulting from Combined Internal and External Factors
What exactly causes skin sensitivity? Director Hu Kui Kui explained that the causes of skin sensitivity are primarily divided into internal and external factors. "Internal factors mainly refer to an individual's constitution. For example, people with allergic constitutions are more prone to allergies than the general population."Director Hu Kui Kui elaborated that external factors primarily involve allergic reactions triggered by external substances. For instance, some women are inherently intolerant to any cosmetics; even minimal contact may cause skin redness, swelling, or itching, making cosmetics a sensitivity trigger for such individuals. Sensitivity triggers vary among different people.
Currently in summer, many women use sunscreen for protection. Most people assume that the higher the sun protection factor (SPF), the better the protection. Director Hu Kuikui emphasized that sunscreens are chemical sunscreens, which can cause certain damage to the skin. Moreover, the higher the SPF, the greater the potential harm to the skin, increasing the likelihood of skin sensitivity. Therefore, Director Hu Kuikui recommends that women prioritize physical sunscreens during summer.
