Many individuals have sensitive skin types that react to even minor irritants with allergic responses. How should we care for such skin? Director Hu Kuikui of the Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics Center at Guangdong Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital emphasizes that deep-cleansing products must never be used on sensitive skin.
Sensitive Skin Should Avoid Deep Cleansing
Director Hu Kuihui explained to the editor of Public Health Network that individuals with sensitive skin have lower tolerance levels. Using deep-cleansing products—such as strong cleansers or scrubs—or undergoing treatments like facial steaming or exfoliation may exacerbate skin allergies.Director Hu Kui Kui emphasized, "Therefore, this group should opt for mildly alkaline cleansers, use lukewarm water when washing, and avoid excessive cleansing. Otherwise, it may disrupt the skin's protective lipid barrier, similarly exacerbating sensitivity."
Director Hu Kui Kui noted that beyond cleansing precautions, daily skincare routines are equally crucial."Individuals with sensitive skin must prioritize hydration to ensure the skin remains adequately moisturized. Additionally, products containing fragrances, alcohol, or fruit acids should be avoided whenever possible." Director Hu Kui Kui explained that these ingredients are chemical substances that can cause significant irritation to the skin, triggering allergic reactions.
Women with sensitive skin should minimize makeup use.
"Beauty-conscious women with sensitive skin should minimize makeup use and avoid heavy application," Director Hu emphasized. Since cosmetics increase skin burden, such individuals should ideally refrain from wearing makeup. If makeup is necessary, reduce wear time; during removal, use gentle methods without excessive scrubbing to prevent further barrier damage.
Beyond external care, internal dietary adjustments are equally crucial. Director Hu Kui Kui noted that food is a significant contributor to skin allergies. Therefore, limit consumption of warming, spicy, or allergenic foods like crab, shrimp, seafood, and lamb. Instead, prioritize fruits, vegetables, and soy products to achieve balanced nutrition and boost immunity.
