However, vegetables like Chinese chives or Chinese broccoli without distinct bases don't face this issue. Even bell peppers, which hang downward, follow this pattern.Experts explain that since bell pepper plants are relatively short, pesticides are often sprayed from top to bottom, causing significant pesticide accumulation at the stem end. Thus, vegetables with uneven stem ends like bell peppers face this issue, while others like yardlong beans or cucumbers do not. Therefore, when preparing vegetables, it's best to trim off the ground-level leafy stems.For vegetables like green peppers, remove the stem before eating.
To consume pesticide-free vegetables, many people prefer purchasing leafy greens and yardlong beans with insect damage, assuming such produce hasn't been sprayed.
Don't be overly enthusiastic about buying vegetables and fruits with insect damage—the presence of such marks isn't a reliable indicator of pesticide use.After consumers buy insect-damaged produce, they rarely find live insects in the vegetables. Farmers do not manually remove insects; instead, they typically eliminate them with pesticides after infestation occurs. In insect-damaged produce, pesticides kill adult insects, while in undamaged produce, they target larvae or eggs.It's also important to note that adult insects are significantly more resistant than larvae, potentially requiring higher pesticide doses. Since adults appear later than larvae, vegetables with insect damage are often sprayed closer to harvest. This results in less pesticide breakdown and higher residue levels. In summary, don't blindly trust the old belief that "insect damage means no pesticides."
