Neurology Correspondent Zhang Xueqing To provide better treatment for more pediatric patients, under the guidance of Fudan University Children's Hospital, Xiamen Children's Hospital (Fudan University Children's Hospital Xiamen Branch) has introduced ketogenic diet therapy. But what exactly is the ketogenic diet? What does it do? Director Lin Caimei of the Neurology Department explains: Ketogenic diet therapy is a non-pharmacological treatment widely used worldwide, particularly for children with difficult-to-control epilepsy. It involves a high-fat, low-carbohydrate, and moderate-protein diet while maintaining normal caloric intake. It is primarily applicable to all children with refractory epilepsy.
Of course, the ketogenic diet is not suitable for all children, and certain conditions prohibit its use. Treatment typically lasts at least 1-2 years and must be tapered off gradually—discontinuation should never be abrupt. Before starting, patients require comprehensive evaluation by the director, physicians, nurses, and nutritionists, along with necessary tests. Additionally, family members must undergo training before treatment begins.
