As one enters middle age, yin energy begins to increase within the body while yang energy gradually diminishes—a natural law of life. With the rise of yin energy, the body accumulates excess impurities, known in traditional Chinese medicine as "yin toxins." These include water toxins, damp toxins, lipid toxins, phlegm toxins, stasis toxins, and qi toxins. Learning to expel these yin toxins creates space for the body's yang energy to thrive.Among the yin toxins, water toxin is the most severe, typically stemming from weakened kidney function. Individuals over 40 should take note: if you wake up with puffiness under your eyes or swollen ankles, it's likely water turbidity. To expel water toxin, first consult a doctor to check for kidney or heart issues. If the water toxin is caused by poor kidney function, you can take Jinkui Shenqi Pills to warm the kidneys and stimulate the body's qi transformation capacity. If neither kidney nor heart disease is present, it indicates poor qi and blood circulation, requiring increased exercise. Dietary choices should include moisture-dispelling foods like loofah and winter melon. Damp-Toxicity. Dampness is an abnormal state of water, transformed from moisture. Those with internal damp-toxicity typically exhibit a white, greasy tongue coating, nausea, loss of appetite, and loose stools. Damp-toxicity primarily results from spleen qi deficiency, which fails to transform dampness.Among common foods, legumes are most nourishing for the spleen. Try boiling various beans into porridge. Alternatively, stew meat with codonopsis and white atractylodes for excellent spleen-strengthening, dampness-removing, and qi-regulating effects.
Phlegm-Toxin. Some individuals experience incessant phlegm production upon waking, indicating phlegm-toxin accumulation. This condition typically stems from dietary imbalances or impaired lung function. For those with weak airways and excessive phlegm, Er Chen Tang (Double Chen Decoction) may be effective. Prepare one dose with 10g each of Poria cocos, Pinellia ternata, and Citrus reticulata peel, plus 6g of Glycyrrhiza uralensis. Simmer in water and consume daily for seven days to dissolve phlegm. In daily diet, radish is the best phlegm-resolving food. You can buy raw radish and mix it with a little aromatic vinegar for a cold salad. Additionally, increase intake of heat-clearing and phlegm-resolving foods like winter melon, figs, seaweed, and luo han guo.
Fat toxins. Those with fat toxins are generally overweight with excessive body fat, often consuming alcohol, meat, and fried foods. This severely damages the liver, making them prone to diseases like fatty liver. To clear lipid toxins, first reduce blood lipids. Boil hawthorn berries and lotus leaves for drinking to dissolve phlegm and lower lipids. Regularly consume vegetables like onions. Additionally, massage the Fenglong acupoint on the calf (located 8 cun above the outer ankle bone, lateral to the Tiaokou point, two finger-widths from the anterior edge of the tibia) to aid digestion, relieve stagnation, and reduce fat.
Stagnant Toxins. Stagnant toxins refer to toxins lurking in the bloodstream, typically emerging from middle age onwards. Common manifestations include purplish veins under the tongue, forgetfulness, dry skin, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and a sallow complexion. Those with stagnant toxins may take Danshen tablets or steep Danshen or hawthorn in water to drink. This helps invigorate blood circulation, resolve stasis, and clear vascular debris.
Qi toxins. Qi toxins reside within the lungs. Traditional Chinese medicine holds that "the lungs govern qi" and "the kidneys govern qi intake." Those with qi toxins often have impaired lung and kidney function, typically exhibiting strong bodily odors such as bad breath or sweaty odor. To prevent qi toxins, practice deep breathing exercises upon waking each morning—known as "breathing and exhaling"—to expel stale air from the lungs and maintain fresh internal air.
It's worth noting that the liver is the body's largest detoxification organ. To eliminate toxins fundamentally, protect and nourish the liver to enhance its detoxification capacity. Regularly drink water infused with goji berries and chrysanthemum flowers, consume mulberries, and eat plenty of fresh vegetables.
