It's very common for little ones to develop eczema. Yet parents often wonder why their carefully cared-for babies still get it. Why does eczema seem to target little ones?
Causes of baby eczema:
1.Environmental allergens in modern clothing: synthetic fabrics, artificial leather products, and clothing-related substances like dyes, bleaches, mothproofing agents, mold inhibitors, and stiffeners.
2. Environmental allergens in modern food production: chemical fertilizers, pesticides, artificial feed, feed additives, and food processing agents like preservatives, mineral oxidants, flavorings, colorants, ripening agents, and thickeners.
3. Environmental allergens in modern living environments include synthetic building components, chemical coatings, plastic products, rubber goods, artificial fibers, adhesives, waterproofing agents, electromagnetic radiation from household and office electronics, as well as cleaning agents and insecticides.
4. Various furry animals and aquatic creatures are also triggering factors for infant eczema.
5. Family history of allergic conditions—such as relatives with eczema, allergic rhinitis, allergic dermatitis, allergic conjunctivitis, asthma, food allergies, or drug allergies—increases an infant's susceptibility to developing eczema.
6. The infant's own physical constitution, including a thinner stratum corneum that is more sensitive to external stimuli.
7. Inappropriate diet, contact with certain items, or environmental factors can trigger infant eczema.
When eczema does appear, proper care is essential:
First, regarding diet. During the eczema period, new mothers should monitor whether the baby reacts allergically to foods like milk, eggs, or shrimp, and avoid these potential allergens. If the baby is breastfed, the mother should avoid spicy or irritating foods and reduce high-fat intake during the eczema period. Continue breastfeeding consistently, as breast milk boosts the baby's immunity. Appropriate complementary foods can also be introduced.
Second, environmental factors. During the eczema flare-up, avoid exposing the baby to direct sunlight. Maintain a moderate indoor temperature and ensure good ventilation. Keep the baby away from humid, stuffy environments, as these can worsen the condition. Minimize exposure to dust and avoid contact with pets like cats and dogs.
Third, clothing choices. Opt for natural cotton fabrics during eczema flare-ups, as they offer superior breathability to keep skin dry and comfortable. Avoid wool or synthetic materials against the skin, which can cause itching and scratching.Clothes should be washed frequently. On sunny days, hang them outside to dry in direct sunlight, which effectively kills bacteria.
Fourth, bathing. During eczema flare-ups, bathe your baby once daily with lukewarm water. Gently cleanse the skin, pat dry thoroughly after washing, and apply a moisturizer suitable for eczema.Important note: Avoid excessive cleansing of the baby's skin, especially during baths. Do not use harsh soaps, disinfectants, or other irritating products on the baby's skin. Also, never bathe the baby with hot water.
