Sophora Root Bark is the root bark of Sophora japonica, a leguminous plant, with a bitter and neutral taste. It dispels wind and dampness, reduces swelling, and alleviates pain. The root contains sophora flavone, glucoside, and racemic sophora flavone. It is indicated for stroke-induced rigidity, numbness of the skin, mouth ulcers, toothache, and intestinal bleeding. The usual dosage is 6–15 grams, decocted in water.Externally applied to treat burns, scalds, and hemorrhoids.
Toona sinensis root
Toona sinensis root is the root bark of the Toona sinensis tree, a member of the Meliaceae family. It has a bitter, cold taste. It clears heat, removes dampness, astringes the intestines to stop bleeding, and kills parasites and scabies. Medical Forest Seal of Medicinal Herbs states:It drains lung heat, dries spleen dampness, eliminates central heat, treats diarrhea, chronic dysentery, intestinal bleeding, uterine bleeding, and frequent red urine." Chinese Materia Medica states: "Treats chronic diarrhea, persistent dysentery, intestinal bleeding with bloody stools, uterine bleeding, leukorrhea, seminal emission, turbid discharge, malnutrition, roundworm infestation, and skin sores." It contains azadirachtin and tannins.Indications: Dysentery, chronic diarrhea, intestinal bleeding, uterine bleeding, vaginal discharge, ascariasis. Jujube Root Bark Jujube root bark is the root bark of the jujube plant (Rhamnaceae family). Sweet in taste, warm in nature. It astringes the intestines to stop diarrhea and promotes wound healing to stop bleeding. Indications: Diarrhea, dysentery, hematuria, traumatic bleeding.
Elm Root
Elm root is the root bark of the elm tree (Ulmus species) in the Ulmaceae family. It has a sweet taste and neutral nature. It moistens the intestines to relieve constipation, promotes diuresis to reduce swelling, and clears heat to detoxify. It is suitable for abdominal distension, constipation, edema, and difficulty urinating.
Mulberry Root
Mulberry root is the root bark of the mulberry tree (Morus alba), a small tree of the Moraceae family. It is sweet and cold in nature. It has the effects of purging the lungs to relieve asthma, promoting diuresis to reduce swelling. The Compendium of Materia Medica states: "It removes water retention in the lungs, spitting blood, thirst due to heat, edema with full limbs, and promotes urination."Compendium of Materia Medica states: "Suitable for those with water retention in the lungs and excess lung fire." Modern research suggests it possesses sedative, tranquilizing, anticonvulsant, analgesic, and antipyretic effects on the nervous system. It can be used for lung heat cough and wheezing, edema nephritis, pneumonia, and bronchitis.
Apricot Tree Root
The root of the apricot tree (Prunus armeniaca), a dicotyledonous plant in the Rosaceae family. It has a bitter and warm nature. It promotes qi circulation, induces abortion, aids digestion, and detoxifies. The Compendium of Materia Medica states: "It is primarily used to induce abortion." It is suitable for retained placenta and stillbirth. For poisoning from excessive consumption of apricot kernels, take 1-2 liang (approximately 50-100 grams) of the root decocted internally.
Willow Root
Willow root is the bark of the willow tree. It dispels wind-dampness and promotes urination. For diuresis and treating dysuria, decoct 15–30 grams of willow root or rootlets and take orally. To dispel wind-dampness and relieve joint stiffness, decoct 15–30 grams per dose or boil in wine for external washing of affected areas.
