In daily life, many people experience ankle sprains (also known as twisted ankles) while walking or running, often encountering them once or multiple times.
Mild sprains may cause only localized discomfort, while severe cases can result in bruising and swelling across the entire foot, making walking difficult. During acute episodes, immediate rest is essential—cease all physical activity or sports.
Therefore, the first rule of care is to avoid moving the injured joint. The next step is to apply ice. Place ice cubes in a plastic bag, add a little water, and apply it to the injured area. Apply for fifteen minutes, then rest for five minutes. Repeat this cycle for about one to two hours (for approximately three days).
When suffering a sprained ankle, many people initially apply cold compresses to reduce swelling, only to switch to heat or warm water soon after to promote healing. This approach is actually incorrect. Modern medicine advises that, barring special circumstances, cold therapy should be used for at least the first 48 hours after injury, not heat.
Ice reduces blood flow to the injured area, controlling internal bleeding and swelling while accelerating recovery. Why avoid heat during the first two days? Elevated temperature increases blood flow to the injury, worsening swelling and pain. If small blood vessels rupture, heat can increase bleeding, hinder hematoma absorption, and delay healing.
So, how should cold therapy be applied? Generally, during the first two days after injury, apply an ice pack for 10 to 20 minutes every one to two hours. Always place a towel, bandage, or similar material between the ice pack and the skin.
In addition to cold therapy, three key points should be followed during the initial stages of injury:
First, rest the injured area and avoid movement.Second, apply appropriate bandaging to the injured area, which also helps reduce swelling. Third, elevate the injured limb slightly above heart level to minimize local blood flow. Once swelling subsides, apply warm compresses to dilate local blood vessels and promote hematoma absorption.
Avoid improper massage or manipulation, as this may exacerbate inflammation.Consider temporarily using crutches to avoid improper weight-bearing on the foot during walking, which could hinder recovery or cause re-injury. When resting, elevate the foot as much as possible to promote blood circulation and reduce ankle swelling.
Patients should also seek immediate medical attention to rule out complications such as ligament tears or fractures. Rehabilitation therapy is highly effective in alleviating pain and swelling.
Treatment for ankle sprains involves not only addressing pain but also identifying the cause of the injury and implementing preventive measures to avoid recurrence.
Inappropriate choices of terrain or footwear, and even foot abnormalities (such as flat feet), can lead to ankle sprains.Previously injured feet require enhanced training in flexibility, muscle strength, and proprioceptive balance to prevent further injury!
Finally, wrap the injured joint with elastic bandages. Additionally, elevate the injured area daily to prevent swelling. This cost-free, self-administered approach offers significant benefits for sprained joints!
