Late periods, low body temperature, and infertility after marriage
Ms. Wang, a resident of Tianhe District, Guangzhou, remained unable to conceive for five years after marriage. She recently sought consultation with Dr. Li Ying, Chief Physician of Reproductive Health and Infertility at a Guangzhou hospital. During their conversation, Ms. Wang became emotional and tearful. Ovulation disorders account for about 30% of female infertility cases.
Ovulation disorders, also known as anovulation, are one of the primary causes of female infertility, accounting for approximately 25% to 30% of cases.Beyond infertility, ovulation disorders can also cause menstrual irregularities, amenorrhea, hirsutism, and obesity. Dr. Li Ying explains that typically, a woman's basal body temperature rises by about 1°C around ovulation. This temperature increase signals the start of ovulation and indicates a fertile window. If ovulation fails to occur during the expected period, the temperature remains low.
In reality, some women mistakenly believe menstruation alone indicates ovulation has occurred. However, this is not necessarily true. Li Ying pointed out that if the basal body temperature does not fluctuate (rise), ovulation may not have occurred even if menstruation begins. This situation occurs in women with anovulatory uterine bleeding and those with follicular rupture syndrome (also known as pseudo-ovulation).Beyond medical conditions preventing ovulation, insufficient luteal phase function can also shorten the duration of elevated basal body temperature or cause irregular menstruation.
Basal Body Temperature Tracking Reveals Ovulation Status Li Ying further notes that ovulation is influenced by factors like environment, emotional state, overall health, sexual activity, and contraceptive medications. This can lead to early ovulation, double ovulation, delayed ovulation, or even temporary anovulation.Relying solely on menstrual cycle calculations may sometimes fail to pinpoint the ovulation date. Women of childbearing age can determine their ovulation period by measuring basal body temperature. Intercourse during this time offers the highest chance of conception.
Beyond monitoring basal body temperature, other methods can help women identify their ovulation window. Observing cervical mucus is one such method: thin mucus may indicate no ovulation has occurred. Longer, stretchy mucus with elasticity suggests ovulation has begun. After ovulation, mucus typically becomes thicker and more viscous. If no such signs appear, it may be wise to consider potential health issues.
