What causes peeling skin on hands? In daily life, peeling skin on hands is relatively common. For some people, peeling starts from the fingers and extends all the way to the palms, with a layer of skin completely shedding. This can occur up to twice a year, though once a year is more typical, often happening in the latter half of the year. Those experiencing this type of peeling may wonder what causes it and whether it's related to illness. Below are common reasons for peeling skin on hands.
Reason 1: Normal Peeling Many people experience normal hand peeling, typically in the latter half of the year, especially early autumn. This often occurs after contact with soap or detergent, appearing seemingly without cause. Peeling usually starts at the fingertips and gradually spreads across the entire palm. In some cases, only the fingers peel. After shedding the surface layer, the hands return to normal without pain, itching, or inflammation. This is a normal phenomenon, so no need to panic. In daily life, minimize contact with irritating chemicals like soap and detergent, and consider taking vitamin C supplements.
2. Dry Air Causes Peeling Dry air is another common cause of hand peeling. For example, in winter, cold and dry temperatures can dehydrate hands if not properly cared for, leading to dead skin buildup. It's recommended to drink plenty of water during winter and apply hand cream for protection.
3. Vitamin deficiency Vitamin deficiency can also cause hand peeling. Individuals who prefer meat over vegetables often experience this issue, primarily due to a lack of vitamin B. Therefore, incorporating more vegetables into your daily diet is recommended.
Skin peeling on hands is common in daily life. For some, it starts on the fingers and spreads to the palms, shedding entire layers of skin. This occurs up to twice a year, typically once annually, often in the latter half of the year.Primary symptoms include red patches and itching on the palms. As tinea manuum is highly contagious and poses health risks, prompt treatment is advised to prevent infecting family members.
5. Dyshidrotic eczema is another cause of hand peeling. Those with dyshidrotic eczema typically develop red blisters on their hands accompanied by intense itching. Palm peeling may be seasonal and can resolve spontaneously, generally requiring no special treatment. For severe or recurrent cases, Western medicine often employs sedatives, antihistamines, and anticholinergic drugs.
1. During the blister stage, focus on astringency and itch relief. Apply traditional Chinese medicine Fukanjie ointment externally or soak in a 10% alum solution.
2. During the peeling stage, protect the regenerating epidermis with topical Fu Kang Jie ointment.
3. For dry skin with thickened keratin and small fissures, apply moisturizing and anti-cracking Fu Kang Mei ointment. Avoid forcibly removing partially detached keratin to prevent pain or bleeding.
4. For severe or recurrent cases, administer Liuwei Dihuang Pills or Liuwei Dihuang Decoction with modifications: Prepared Rehmannia 20g, Chinese Yam 15g, Cornus Officinalis 10g, Moutan Bark 10g, Alisma Rhizome 10g, Poria 15g.15g Saposhnikovia root, 30g Tribulus terrestris. Add water to the above formula, decoct, and take orally. Generally, 3-5 doses will show improvement.
5. Apply Vitamin C injection solution to the affected area twice daily for a 3-day course. This promotes effective recovery of skin lesions.
Method: Wash hands thoroughly and allow to partially dry. Pour Vitamin C injection into palm, then rub solution evenly between palms until dry and whitish. Rinse off. Apply twice daily, 2 ml per application.
Efficacy: Reports indicate Vitamin C treatment for hand peeling shows improvement after one application for mild cases and three applications for severe cases, with recovery within days.
6. Patients should maintain a positive outlook, avoid mental stress and emotional agitation, and minimize contact with alkaline detergents. This helps prevent the condition.
7. Finely chop ginger, steep in white liquor for 24 hours, then apply to affected areas 1–2 times daily. Results are remarkably effective.
