Hands are frequently used in daily life, making finger joint pain inevitable at times, which can hinder normal activities. It's important to identify the cause of finger joint pain promptly and take appropriate measures. Additionally, performing a few simple exercises regularly can help relieve finger discomfort.
Causes of Finger Joint Pain
1. Osteophytes (bone spurs) or Tendonitis
Osteophytes cause swelling and pain in finger joints, with bony projections forming inside the joint. This typically affects individuals over 40, especially causing morning stiffness that subsides quickly. X-rays reveal characteristic bone growths.Tendinitis commonly affects the wrist, thumb, and middle finger. Bending the fingers may cause pain and produce a clicking sound. In severe cases, the joint may become unable to flex or extend normally.
2. Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a joint disorder caused by overuse and tissue degeneration. Patients often experience pain in the shoulder and finger joints, commonly affecting overweight middle-aged and elderly individuals. Morning finger joint pain is typical, with severe cases presenting joint swelling and muscle atrophy. Additionally, excessive strain on finger joints or exposure to cold and dampness can trigger joint pain.
Simple Exercises to Relieve Finger Joint Pain
1. Thumb Rotation
During leisure time, rotate your thumbs. Aim to trace circles with your thumb tips, rotating counterclockwise and clockwise for two minutes each. Alternatively, pinch your fingertips with tweezers for three seconds, repeating this action about seven times.Alternatively, grip a tennis ball with both hands and rotate your wrists forcefully yet slowly to stimulate the palms. 2. Interlocking Fingers Interlock your fingers and twist them together. Repeat this motion while keeping the inner sides of your wrists pressed tightly together. Performing this several times stimulates acupuncture points on the hands, alleviating finger pain.Alternatively, press both palms together and clasp them alternately. Hold the grip for three seconds before releasing, repeating this sequence five times. You can also use fingers to grip ballpoint pens. Place one thin pen between each finger joint (excluding the thumb), creating noticeable stimulation and discomfort in the fingers.
Friendly Reminder
Identify the root cause of finger joint pain for targeted treatment. Regularly perform finger exercises. Avoid excessive cold exposure in summer—never place hands directly on ice to prevent cold invasion, which can trigger joint pain. Individuals who use mice for extended periods should prioritize finger mobility to prevent joint stiffness.
