The difference between handmade soap and industrial soap becomes apparent during production. When handmade soap is poured into molds, the reaction isn't fully complete—many ingredients haven't fully reacted yet. To allow for full reaction, it requires several days to cure.
Handmade soap contains abundant glycerin, a crucial moisturizing agent for skin. Most people rinse off soap lather with water after washing their face, which removes this glycerin, potentially negating its moisturizing benefits.
The Difference Between Handmade and Industrial Soap
The primary distinction lies in the saponification reaction temperature. Handmade soap is crafted below 60°C (140°F), while industrial production typically occurs at 90-105°C (198-212°F). Temperature variations significantly impact reaction speed—generally, higher temperatures accelerate reactions. Each 10°C increase roughly doubles the reaction rate.
During handmade soap production, the reaction proceeds slowly—sometimes showing little progress even after 20-30 minutes. Industrial soap-making increases temperatures to ensure raw materials fully convert into finished products.
Is handmade soap less alkaline than industrial soap?
When making handmade soap, the mixture poured into molds hasn't fully reacted yet. It requires extended curing—sometimes weeks—before use.After weeks of waiting, significant amounts of unreacted sodium hydroxide remain. Using such strongly alkaline soap on the face may actually be harsher than mild industrial soap.
Industrial soap undergoes a washing process with brine, which removes unreacted sodium hydroxide, reducing alkalinity and making it safer for use.
Is handmade soap more natural?
Handmade soap retains glycerin and contains natural ingredients—all essential substances our skin needs. However, many of these components are easily washed away during use, potentially diminishing their effectiveness.
Industrial soaps, on the other hand, often include added non-natural fragrances, plant extracts, and other substances. Compared to handmade soaps, they may contain higher levels of alkaline compounds. Ultimately, each has its own advantages.
Note that cold-processed handmade soaps contain significant alkaline substances that cannot be precisely measured. They may not be ideal for facial cleansing. If you wish to use them on your face, it's best to let them cure longer or test the pH with pH strips to avoid skin irritation.
