In reality, rock climbing evolved as a competitive sport from mountaineering. Originating in the Soviet Union during the 1950s, it began as a military training discipline within the armed forces. In 1947, the Soviet Union established the first Rock Climbing Committee.In 1948, the Soviet Union hosted the first national rock climbing championship, marking the world's inaugural rock climbing competition. From then on, the sport gained popularity across Europe. In 1974, rock climbing was included as an event in the World Games, and in 1976, the Soviet Union hosted the first international rock climbing competition. The first World Rock Climbing Championships were held in 1991.
The emergence of rock climbing techniques dates back over 100 years. As early as 1865, British mountaineer Edward first used rudimentary equipment like ice axes, chains, and climbing ropes to successfully ascend perilous peaks, thereby becoming the pioneer of rock climbing techniques and tools.Subsequent inventions like inflatable pitons, steel wire ladders, and various mountaineering knots propelled climbing techniques into a more mature phase. Climbing in China Compared to Western nations and Asian counterparts like Japan and South Korea, China's climbing scene arrived later. Yet after over a decade of cultivation and development, its prospects have become highly promising.Since its introduction to China in 1987, this extreme sport—combining technical skill, thrill, and visual appeal—has captivated young people with its unique charm and rapidly gained popularity among the youth. After over a decade of development, rock climbing, which has swept Europe and America, has not only established a foothold in China with a relatively stable enthusiast base but is also expanding at an unprecedented pace.
In 1987, China's mountaineering team sent eight coaches and athletes to Nagano, Japan, for systematic rock climbing training. Upon their return, they organized the first national rock climbing competition that October at the natural rock face of Dashuiyu Reservoir in Huairou, Beijing. In 1990, the Huairou National Mountaineering Team Training Base hosted its first competition on an artificial climbing wall.In 1993, rock climbing was officially recognized as a competitive sport by the State Sports Commission. Since then, the National Rock Climbing Championships—China's most authoritative high-level event—have been held annually. In 1999, the inaugural China Extreme Sports Competition took place in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, where rock climbing became a cornerstone event due to its unique appeal, continuing as an annual fixture thereafter.
From this point onward, indoor rock climbing gradually gained widespread popularity across the country.
Indoor climbing involves ascending artificially constructed walls of varying heights and difficulty levels (typically 6–8 meters tall). These walls feature movable holds of diverse shapes and sizes. Beginners may select larger holds, while those with more skill can choose smaller ones to increase difficulty and build arm strength.Adjustable holds also allow for varied climbing routes. Regardless of wall selection, hold choice, or route planning, a gradual progression remains a wise approach.
Indoor rock climbing gained immediate popularity upon its introduction. Internationally, some middle and elementary schools have even incorporated it into physical education curricula. Reports indicate the optimal age to begin learning rock climbing is 12–13, when children's physical and mental development meet the basic requirements for climbing. It not only builds physical strength but also cultivates the courage to overcome challenges independently. The fundamental techniques of rock climbing primarily involve hand and footwork: I. Hand Techniques The primary purpose of using hands during climbing is to propel the body upward and maintain close contact with the rock face.Rock holds come in numerous shapes, with dozens of common types. Climbers must familiarize themselves with these hold shapes, knowing where to grip and how to apply force for different holds. Based on the protrusions (or depressions) and their orientation, techniques include digging, pinching, pulling, tugging, gripping, and pushing. However, flexibility is key—a single hold can accommodate multiple grips.
Finger strength is crucial during climbing. Regular exercises include finger grip holds, pull-ups, finger-hang pull-ups, and lifting heavy objects. Some advanced climbers can now perform pull-ups with a single finger. When tackling longer routes, climbers can choose easier sections to rest both hands alternately.
II. Footwork Techniques in Rock Climbing
Footwork emphasizes the application of foot movements during climbing, encompassing techniques like stepping on footholds and foot switching. The correct foot switching method ensures stability without increasing the burden on your hands.For example, when shifting from the right foot to the left: 1. Lift the left foot above the right foot. 2. Rotate the right foot counterclockwise (as viewed downward) around the rightmost edge of the foothold, freeing the left side while maintaining weight on the right foot. 3. Drive the left foot into the hold from above. 4. Immediately release the right foot, transferring weight to the left foot.
Basic Rock Climbing Principles:
Grab: Use your hands to grasp protruding rock features. Dig in: Use your hands to dig into rock edges, cracks, or ledges.
Pull: With a secure hold above and in front, press your forearms against the wall, hook into cracks or other features, and use your arms to pull your body up or sideways.
Push: Use the force of your arms against the rock face or objects below or to the side to move your body. Reach into cracks, flex and extend your hands or fingers to grip rock features as footholds, and shift your body position.
Push: Support your body weight using the inner ball of your foot or toe pressure to reduce upper body strain. Step: Utilize flexibility to bypass difficult sections and find advantageous footholds.
Hang: Maintain balance by hooking your toes or heels onto rock features to facilitate movement.
Step: Use the front part of your foot to step down firmly on larger footholds, reducing upper body strain while moving your body.
