When it comes to pressure ulcers, many young people remain unaware. However, if you have an elderly family member who is bedridden long-term, your likelihood of encountering this condition increases significantly.
Once a pressure ulcer develops, the patient experiences pain, often becoming tender to the touch. If left untreated, pressure ulcers can severely diminish the patient's quality of life.
What are pressure ulcers?
Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores or pressure sores, occur when prolonged pressure on localized skin impairs blood circulation. This leads to tissue damage, ulceration, or even necrosis due to nutrient deprivation in the skin and subcutaneous layers. They commonly affect individuals who are bedridden or immobile for extended periods.
Pressure ulcers typically progress through four stages:
Stage 1: Localized erythema that does not blanch under pressure;
Stage 2: Partial-thickness skin damage involving the dermis;
Stage 3: Full-thickness tissue damage extending to the subcutaneous tissue, without involvement of supporting structures like muscle, tendon, or bone;Stage IV: Full-thickness damage to subcutaneous tissue, involving supporting structures like muscles, tendons, and bone.
Prompt treatment is essential if pressure ulcers develop. Below is an overview of how to treat them.
Did you know? Here's how to treat pressure ulcers
For mild pressure ulcers, regular repositioning, specialized equipment (like pressure-relieving mattresses), topical dressings to promote healing, and adequate nutrition are key. If infection occurs, use topical antiseptics, local pain relievers, and consider oral antibiotics or pain medication.
If significant necrotic tissue is present, surgical instruments, high-pressure water jets, or ultrasound may be used to debride the wound and promote healing. For severe pressure ulcers that cannot heal on their own, surgery is often required to close the wound, accelerate healing, and reduce infection risk. Typically, after thorough wound cleansing, healthy skin grafts from other areas are used to cover the wound.
If a bedridden or immobile individual develops pressure ulcers at home, there is no need for excessive worry. With timely, scientifically sound treatment, pressure ulcers can generally be cured. Early detection, early treatment, early recovery.
