Many people have experienced lumps at the base of their tongue. What causes these lumps? Are they harmful? Below, we explore the reasons behind lumps at the tongue base to help you better understand your health. Be sure to read carefully!
Causes of Lumps at the Base of the Tongue
1. The red bumps at the base of the tongue are called circumvallate papillae. There are over ten of these papillae, located in front of the sulcus lingualis. They are relatively large with flat tops. The mucosa around each papilla forms a ring-shaped groove, and the epithelium on both sides of the groove contains numerous taste buds.
2. The lamina propria contains numerous serous taste glands whose ducts open at the bottom of the sulcus. The thin fluid secreted by these glands continuously washes food debris from the surface of taste buds, enabling them to constantly receive sensory stimuli. Taste buds perceive four primary tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, and salty.
3. Other tastes, such as astringent and spicy, are combinations of these four. Sweet taste buds are concentrated on the tip of the tongue; sour taste buds are more numerous on the posterior lateral sides of the tongue;
4. Bitter taste buds are clustered at the root of the tongue; salty taste buds are found on the tip and anterior lateral sides of the tongue. Therefore, the small bumps often visible at the root of the tongue are actually normal tissue structures.the small bumps observed at the tongue's root are actually normal tissue structures.
5. Additionally, bumps on the tongue root may indicate internal heat. "Internal heat" refers to an imbalance of yin and yang within the body, resulting in excessive internal heat. This "heat" describes certain hot-natured symptoms within the body. Internal heat thus manifests as an internal heat syndrome arising from yin-yang imbalance.
6. Simultaneously, besides internal heat causing lumps at the tongue root, sublingual cysts resulting from localized inflammation can also lead to lumps at the tongue root. When inflamed, they may enlarge and sometimes become painful. This occurs when the body's resistance is low; when resistance improves, they shrink again and require no special treatment.
What to do about lumps at the base of the tongue
1. For breakfast, the best option is black rice porridge cooked until soft, then blended with 1-2 eggs and brought to a boil. Lunch and dinner should consist of staple foods paired with meat and vegetables, primarily beef, pork, chicken, potatoes, bok choy, Chinese cabbage, and cabbage.
Consume sea shrimp 1-2 times weekly and eel 1-2 times weekly. Rotate these dishes, preparing them stewed until tender for optimal gastrointestinal digestion and absorption.
Take one spoonful of Gui Yuan Paste daily, which can be mixed with black rice porridge. Each morning on an empty stomach, beat one egg thoroughly in a bowl and set aside. Simmer 2 slices of ginger and 8 halved red dates in water over high heat until boiling, then reduce to low heat for 15 minutes.
Pour boiling water over the egg to create a warm, fluffy egg mixture. Consume this while warm to warm the stomach and intestines, dispel cold from the digestive tract, repair damaged mucous membranes, and stimulate appetite. After one week, switch to using 1 slice of ginger and 8 red dates boiled in water to prepare the egg mixture. This regimen can be maintained year-round.
2. Avoid all cold and cooling foods. Do not eat river fish or river shrimp. Steer clear of spicy, greasy, or heat-inducing foods. Common foods that disperse qi or regulate liver qi—such as radish, hawthorn, betel nut, cilantro, perilla leaf, mint, kumquat, chrysanthemum, rose, and papaya—should also be avoided.
Common diuretic, water-draining, and dampness-removing foods like coix seed, poria, adzuki beans, winter melon, watermelon, cucumber, carp, crucian carp, daylily buds, and lettuce should also be avoided.
3. Soak feet in warm water every night before bed until slightly sweaty. After soaking, rub ears and comb hair to replenish kidney qi.
