The health of hair hinges on the kidneys. Most people believe hair nutrition comes from the scalp, assuming that proper scalp care will naturally lead to beautiful hair. But is this truly the case? Let us explain how the condition of your kidneys can be revealed through your hair.
Hair's beauty or lack thereof relates to the Governor Vessel. Originating in the uterus, its branches extend along the spine and belong to the kidneys. As the Governor Vessel runs through the spine, connects to the brain, ascends over the crown, and descends to the kidneys, it forms a pathway linking the kidneys, spinal cord, brain marrow, and hair. Therefore, when the essence and energy of the kidneys are abundant and the marrow sea is plentiful, the vital energy ascends along the Governor Vessel to nourish the hair. This results in thick, lustrous hair growth. This is the physiological basis for the saying that "the radiance of the kidneys manifests in the hair."
The kidneys store essence, and its radiance manifests in the hair. Though nourished by blood, the vitality of hair is fundamentally rooted in the kidneys. The kidneys are the foundation of innate constitution, the organ that stores essence. They not only preserve the innate essence but also store the essence-qi transformed from food and drink by the five viscera and six bowels—the acquired essence. This essence nourishes the viscera and all bodily tissues, serving as the fundamental substance sustaining life and growth.
The vitality of hair is closely tied to the abundance of kidney qi. Throughout life—from childhood, adolescence, youth, and prime to old age—hair changes directly and intimately reflect the rise and fall of kidney qi. This embodies the meaning of "The kidneys... manifest their vitality in the hair" from the Suwen: Six Sections on Zang-Xiang.
The internal fluctuations of kidney qi manifest externally through the hair. Further analysis reveals the relationship between the kidneys and hair primarily lies in the physiological role of the essence within the kidneys. The kidneys store essence, and essence generates blood, indicating that blood production originates from innate essence, which transforms into blood to nourish the hair. The fundamental energy of the human body (yuan qi) is rooted in the kidneys and is generated from the essence within them.Original qi serves as the fundamental driving force for the body's vital transformations, stimulating and promoting hair growth. The physiological effects of the kidneys on hair manifest primarily in three ways: First, kidney essence transforms into blood to nourish hair; Second, kidney essence generates original qi to stimulate and accelerate hair growth; Third, kidney essence nourishes hair through the actions of the Governor Vessel and meridian qi.The Governor Vessel branches from the spine and belongs to the kidneys.
Thus, hair derives its nourishment from qi and blood, while its vitality is rooted in the kidneys. When kidney essence is abundant, hair develops normally, appearing thick, lustrous, and supple; conversely, it becomes sparse, brittle, and dull. Thus, the foremost method in traditional Chinese medicine for hair care is to tonify the kidneys.
The liver stores blood, so the normal circulation, storage, and regulation of blood are closely related to the liver. Only when liver function is normal can all organs and hair throughout the body receive nourishment from the blood. Additionally, the liver governs the free flow of qi. When the liver fails to regulate this flow and qi stagnates, it can lead to impaired circulation of qi and blood, obstructing the supply of nutrients to the hair.
Blood nourishes hair. Just as blood nourishes all tissues and organs, it also nourishes the skin and hair. Blood circulation relies on qi to propel it upward to the lungs, circulate through the meridians, and distribute evenly throughout the body. "Hair is the surplus of blood." When blood and qi are abundant, hair thrives; when deficient, hair becomes dry, sparse, or falls out.
Given the close relationship between blood and hair, various blood disorders—such as blood stasis, blood heat, or blood dryness—can lead to hair abnormalities like hair loss or premature graying.
Traditional medicine holds that "the kidneys store essence, and its radiance manifests in the hair; when kidney qi declines, hair falls out and turns prematurely white." Since "hair is the surplus of blood" and "the liver stores blood," essence and blood share a common origin and transform into each other. Thus, the health of hair growth is directly linked to the liver, kidneys, and the state of qi and blood. Those suffering from hair loss often exhibit deficiency in both liver and kidney, along with insufficiency of qi and blood. When liver and kidney deficiency occurs, essence fails to transform into blood, and blood cannot nourish hair. Without a source for growth, hair roots become hollow and fall out. Deficiency of qi and blood, unable to nourish the entire body, can lead to signs of aging, externally manifesting as hair loss.Sudden emotional shock or prolonged mental stress can also deplete qi, blood, liver, and kidney functions, leading to premature baldness, hair loss, or alopecia areata. The health of the kidneys can be assessed through the condition of one's hair. This concludes our introduction. We hope this information proves helpful. Wishing you good health and smooth sailing this winter.
