In mid-last month, two women working in film and television sought botulinum toxin injections at a beauty clinic to slim their legs. They nearly lost their lives to poisoning and were only saved after being rushed to the ICU. They remain hospitalized. Yesterday, one woman stated she plans to document this "hellish ordeal" in a blog post upon discharge, warning beauty-conscious women to exercise extreme caution with botulinum toxin injections.
It is understood that the two are close friends. Zhang, 25, has worked as a host and appeared in commercials. Li, 27, has starred in several TV dramas. Due to their professions, both are highly conscious of their appearance and sought Botox injections to slim their calves.On June 11th, Zhang sought out a doctor at a beauty salon who had previously administered facial Botox injections to her. The doctor brought both women to his home and injected identical doses of Type A botulinum toxin into each of their legs.
This was Li's first Botox injection. Within 20 minutes, she experienced severe leg pain and weakness, unable to stand steadily.On June 14, Zhang also developed similar symptoms. That afternoon, both women lost control of their bicycles while riding. Li suddenly experienced blurred vision and dizziness. When they reported this to the doctor, he claimed the Botox would naturally metabolize and clear from their bodies within 21 days.On June 16, Zhang also experienced dizziness, an inability to lift her eyelids, slurred speech, and tremors throughout her body. After receiving their call, the cosmetic doctor brought them to her home and administered IV fluids for two days. However, both women still felt short of breath, with Li's symptoms worsening to the point where she could barely speak coherently. They had no choice but to text the doctor for help. The pair then sought treatment at several hospitals, but none proved effective.The doctor brought them back to his home for another week of IV fluids. Their condition worsened—they couldn't eat, drink, or sleep, fearing they might "sleep through it."
After 17 agonizing days, an ambulance rushed them to the hospital emergency department on the afternoon of June 28.
Emergency department doctors stated both patients remained in critical condition for three days in the ICU before stabilizing. Once attractive, they now appeared emaciated and visibly distressed. "They struggle to finish a small piece of cake in half an hour, take hours to drink a bottle of milk, lack the strength to speak, and cannot see clearly," the doctors noted, adding their mental state was severely impaired.
The emergency department director explained that botulinum toxin type A is a neurotoxin used to treat muscle tension disorders and prevent muscle relaxation. It can paralyze muscle nerves to eliminate eye wrinkles and also treat conditions like strabismus, ocular muscle spasms, and facial tics.However, botulinum toxin type A ranks among the most toxic substances. Its poisoning symptoms primarily manifest as various paralyses and gastrointestinal issues, posing severe risks with a high mortality rate. Improper dosage control can easily lead to poisoning or even life-threatening consequences.
