Let art heal your psychological issues. Art as therapy implies that the creative process itself holds therapeutic value. However, due to variations in therapist training and the psychological maturity of participants, the atmosphere and implications evoked by "art as therapy" differ. This approach encompasses four levels, each delving deeper into the psyche. It progresses from perceiving "the form of longevity" to perceiving "the absence of longevity" (Note: This phrase originates from the Diamond Sutra's four-line verse: "No form of person, no form of person, no form of sentient beings, no form of longevity." Here, "longevity" refers to time; "absence of longevity" signifies the absence of "time's existence," leaving only the present moment), and from "conditioned phenomena" to "unconditioned phenomena," gradually delving into the depths and deeper depths of life's essence.
Art therapy can be categorized into five types:
Traditional—Projecting and interpreting the self through artistic creation.
Healing—Reclaiming and restoring the self through artistic creation.
Wellness—Experiencing and enjoying the self through artistic creation.
Spiritual—Dissolving and transcending the self through artistic creation.
Integrative—(1) Integrating personal developmental tasks. (2) Integrating holistic goals across modules.
While the traditional type aligns with psychoanalytic art therapy, the healing, wellness, and spiritual types fall under the 'humanistic' and 'transpersonal' psychological approaches of 'art as therapy.' The integrative type encompasses both of these.
Art as therapy is an inward journey and exploration. Through artistic creation, individuals enter their essential self—encountering, reclaiming, experiencing, and ultimately transcending it. Here, art becomes therapy; art is self-therapy.
