Mastering interpersonal skills in daily life. We all know that making good friends requires adhering to certain principles, but maintaining friendships also demands specific techniques to ensure lasting bonds. Some people start friendships but fail to follow through, abandoning them midway; others even turn against each other, resorting to backstabbing and mutual attacks. Ultimately, these issues stem from a lack of mastery in the art of successful friendship. So, how does one successfully interact with friends? In addition to sincerity and tolerance, the author believes the following four points deserve attention:
1. Listen to your friend's concerns.
As a friend, you must learn to listen. When your friend faces setbacks or troubles, they seek someone to vent their emotions to. By sincerely and patiently listening to their concerns, you provide them with an emotional outlet. While your friend confides in you, not only should you listen patiently, but also occasionally offer a few heartfelt words of comfort or suggest ideas and solutions. This emotional support will help your friend climb out of the swamp of distress, making them feel that having a friend like you is a true source of strength. In this way, your bond deepens, and your friendship grows stronger day by day.A woman once felt utterly miserable due to marital problems. She called a close friend to share her troubles, but her friend was swamped with work and couldn't spare the time to listen. Unable to bear the emotional pressure, the woman ultimately took her own life.Had her friend found time amidst her busyness to listen and offer comfort, she might have avoided such a tragic outcome.Generally speaking, friendships form for various reasons: shared interests and personalities, similar aspirations, comparable cultural backgrounds, or a connection of noble character and kindred spirits. From the perspective of the reasons for forming relationships, there are lifelong friends, soulmates, friends in adversity, noble friendships, friendships transcending age, acquaintances, business acquaintances, family connections, and old friends.Regardless of the reason for your friendship, after a period of interaction, you should exercise discernment and cultivate some relationships more deeply than others. For instance, some friends offer sincere, pure affection and can naturally become close confidants. Others, however, may approach you for self-serving purposes. Once their interests are not met, or when you fall on hard times and no longer hold value for them, they will abandon you. Friends like these should not be trusted deeply. In extreme cases, it is even better to maintain a certain distance.
Yet one must never overstep. If you ask for help once and receive it, but then persistently demand more, pushing your advantage, your friend will grow weary and resentful. Such behavior makes friendship unsustainable. Some individuals disregard others' capacity to give, forcing friendships to satisfy their own needs—another behavior that repels friends. Xiao Liu earned modestly, with little left after covering monthly expenses, leaving him with limited savings. Yet his friend Xiao Zhang insisted on borrowing 30,000 yuan for a house purchase. Unable to comply, Xiao Liu not only refused but grew resentful toward Xiao Zhang's coercive demands.
4. Be present when friends need you most
In a complex society and unpredictable world, no one can guarantee they'll never need help or boast of living a life free from hardship. Thus, when facing difficulties, people naturally seek support. As a friend, when someone needs your assistance, be there promptly and offer a sincere helping hand to help them overcome their challenges.Mastering this principle of friendship will deepen your bonds with others.
