Recently, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), a U.S. consumer advocacy group, issued a statement warning that certain foods from some chain restaurants contain excessively high salt levels. This poses health risks to the heart and brain, increasing the likelihood of heart attacks or strokes. Among the brands named were Burger King and DQ. So, what constitutes a high-salt food? Below, we outline high-salt foods commonly found in daily life that may harm your health.
Eighty Percent of People Consume Too Much Salt
The CSPI statement listed brands with sodium content exceeding 2,300 milligrams. Burger King's Ultimate Breakfast Platter and DQ's Chicken Tender Basket (four-piece) contained 3,020 mg and 2,530 mg of sodium respectively. Some foods even exceed 4,000 mg of sodium—nearly equivalent to a person's daily sodium requirement for two days.
How much salt should one consume daily? Ruan Guangfeng, an expert from the Center for Food and Nutrition Information Exchange, points out that the Chinese Dietary Guidelines recommend adults with moderate physical activity limit daily salt intake to no more than 6 grams. According to the Chinese Nutrition Society, moderate physical activity includes: daily student activities, driving motor vehicles, electrical work, lathe operation, etc.
However, excessive salt intake is now a global challenge. A 2008 survey by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that the average daily salt consumption per person in China was 10.7 grams, with rural residents averaging 11.1 grams. Approximately 81.6% of the population exceeded the recommended intake of 6 grams.
Avoid high-salt foods
Currently, many Chinese people have become aware of the dangers of high-salt diets and consciously reduce the amount of salt added when cooking. However, they often overlook the consumption of foods that are inherently high in salt.
When discussing high-salt foods, many immediately think of pickled vegetables and other salty preserved foods. In reality, items like fast-food burgers, certain breads and pastries from markets, candied fruits, beverages, packaged noodles, and even fresh noodles sold at wet markets contain significant amounts of salt.
Some mistakenly believe that foods lacking a salty taste are low in salt, and they certainly wouldn't associate sweet or bland-tasting foods with high sodium content.Experts explain that certain food production processes necessitate sodium-containing additives. For instance, salt is essential for biscuits, while baking powder primarily consists of sodium bicarbonate. Sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium pyrophosphate are common in beverages, noodles, sausages, and other foods.
Common high-salt foods include MSG, ketchup, oyster sauce, soy sauce, sweet bean sauce, concentrated soup cubes, cheese, cakes, bread, pastries, ice cream, French fries, hamburgers, pizza, instant noodles, sausages, chicken drumsticks, and luncheon meat.
To control salt intake, not only should you use less salt when cooking, but also avoid adding salt if you've already used chicken bouillon, fermented black beans, oyster sauce, or salty sauces. Additionally, reduce consumption of fast food and snacks.
If you've consumed too much salt, the simplest and most effective remedy is to drink plenty of water. Exercise and increased sweating can also help flush out excess salt.Additionally, consuming potassium-rich fruits like bananas and oranges can effectively promote sodium excretion.
This concludes our overview of high-salt foods that may harm your health. We hope this information has provided valuable insights. Finally, we sincerely wish you good health and happiness.
