Aesthetic Fatigue: We Who Loved Each Other Divorced

She and he finally divorced. She moved into the collective dormitory at her workplace, and from then on, she could only eat lunch at the office cafeteria. On her first day there, she ordered a bowl of vegetable and tofu soup. After taking just one sip, she found the soup so salty she couldn't swallow it. Being quick-tempered, she immediately snapped at the cook, "Couldn't you have used less salt?"
In truth, the soup contained no excess salt. It was simply that, due to her high blood pressure, he had always strictly controlled the salt when cooking at home for her health. If any dish didn't suit her taste, or if it was even slightly too salty, she would immediately yell at him, "Are you trying to kill me?" just as she had yelled at the cook just now.
He had long grown accustomed to her outbursts. Each time she yelled at him, he would inevitably smile apologetically and promise to be more careful next time.Gradually, he grew accustomed to her outbursts. Though he personally preferred saltier dishes, whether stir-frying or making soup, he always accommodated her, carefully controlling the salt. Each time he watched her drink the soup until her whole body glowed warm, he would gaze at her dreamily, feeling utterly filled with happiness.
Unnoticed, a month had passed since their divorce. At month's end, he went to the bank to check his monthly salary, only to discover a deposit in their joint savings account. He suddenly realized it was hers—they shared the account, he kept the passbook, she held the card.
This checking account had been overlooked during their divorce settlement. Seeing her deposit filled him with an indescribable sadness.
He called her cell phone. When she answered, she casually told a colleague, "My husband's calling." Then she realized her slip of the tongue. "What's up?" she asked. He explained about the deposit and suggested they meet to settle the money in the passbook.
When she arrived, he was busy in the kitchen: "Have a seat. Dinner will be ready soon. Let's eat together." She looked around the house—it was just as she remembered. The pair of goldfish she'd once kept were still swimming happily in the tank. For a moment, her eyes stung.
As they ate, she suddenly realized how perfectly the flavors suited her taste!Nothing like the salty, unpalatable fare from the office cafeteria. She said, "The savings account is under your name. I'll give you the card." He replied, "Here, take it. You've always just saved money, never withdrawn it. You have plenty. Remember, the password is your birthday."
She couldn't hold back any longer, and tears immediately streamed down her face. After that meal, they remarried.
When young, perhaps this is the real reason many couples divorce. There was never any real conflict; they simply parted ways rashly in a moment of confusion or impulse.
But after truly separating, looking back at each other then, they realize divorce wasn't because love had faded, but merely due to a temporary weariness of each other or sheer stubbornness.
