British psychological experts recently pointed out that for children, "wasting time" is also a form of rest and energy replenishment. It is actually adults' over-scheduling that stifles children's independence and creativity. Experts urge that children should be allowed to "waste time" to a certain extent. Allow Children to Do Nothing 0-3 years old: The Parent-Scheduling Phase.Patrick O'Donnell, Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Glasgow, UK, conducted a 15-year study on "constructive play" behavior—the guidance provided by parents or adults to children's play and daily activities and its effects. He discovered that children possess an innate tendency toward play and exploration. Before age 3, this behavior typically occurs under parental guidance to help children discover interests and learn language.
After age 3, children enter the autonomy phase. They begin showing interest in social activities. Under normal circumstances, children won't feel bored if they discover engaging pursuits or wish to join peer social interactions—unless they lack playmates or face excessive restrictions.
Ages 5–6 mark a critical period for developing independent social skills. At this stage, children prefer playing with peers over spending excessive time with parents or siblings.Parents who habitually monitor their children every minute should take note: they shouldn't constantly act as "satellite trackers" watching over their kids. "Boredom" helps conserve energy Richard Lari, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Aix-Marseille University, emphasizes that periods of "escape" and creativity are vital for children's development. Parents should allow their children moments of boredom, as boredom and "idle time" enable children to rest fully.Larry advises parents not to hover over their children constantly but to grant them time alone and the freedom to entertain themselves.
