Male hormones begin secreting in large quantities after puberty, driving the development and maturation of male reproductive organs. They also influence muscle growth, which is why many weightlifters and bodybuilders secretly use male hormones to enhance muscle mass. However, excessive doses can disrupt mood, leading to irritability and aggression.
Conversely, low testosterone levels can cause muscle atrophy, osteoporosis, fatigue, and loss of libido. Recent studies also indicate that significantly reduced testosterone levels substantially increase the risk of heart disease. What about its impact on mood?Research indicates that men with low testosterone are four times more likely to develop depression than the general population.
Testosterone levels naturally decline with age. In fact, by age 55, approximately 30% of men experience low testosterone.Given testosterone's critical importance for men, should we administer hormone therapy to everyone with low levels? While it may be effective for preventing heart disease, it offers limited benefit for treating depression. Additionally, we must consider testosterone's impact on prostate health, leaving the therapeutic approach still undetermined.
