Exactly! Being too thin isn't good! "Too little facial fat makes skin appear loose and gives a haggard, aged look," says Mary P. Lupo, MD, Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Tulane University in New Orleans."Yo-yo dieting is also problematic—repeated weight fluctuations stretch the skin and cause excessive laxity."
Skin Care Strategy: Maintain a healthy weight through balanced nutrition and exercise, and ensure your face receives ample nourishment.
Nutritionist and author of Beauty Diet, Lisa Dreyfuss, states: "Research shows that proper nutrition can enhance your appearance from the inside out."Her recommended foods include:
Wild salmon and walnuts, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which prevent skin inflammation that leads to wrinkles.
Citrus fruits, kiwis, and spinach, packed with vitamin C that boosts collagen production.
Lycopene in tomato sauce and pink grapefruit protects skin from direct sun damage.
2. Avoid rubbing your eyes
"Pulling, tugging, or rubbing the delicate skin around your eyes can cause darkening," says Dr. J. D. Downey, MD, dermatologist, editor of The Skin Book, and director of the Image Dermatology Institute in Montclair, New York.
As you age, pigment deposits can accumulate, making you appear older.
Skincare tip: If you can't resist rubbing your eyes, see a doctor to diagnose any allergies and treat the condition promptly.
Additionally, be careful not to touch the skin around your eyes when applying makeup or inserting contact lenses to prevent pigmentation issues.
3.Ensure Adequate Sleep
Sleep is crucial for mental alertness, concentration, and complexion.
"Late at night, skin enters a self-renewal state," explains Dr. Janet Graf, MD, Assistant Professor of Dermatology at NYU Langone Medical Center. "It not only repairs itself but also has different pH levels and blood circulation than during the day, making it more receptive to skincare products." Get more sleep—after all, puffy eyes won't make you look younger.
Skin Care Masterclass: To achieve sufficient sleep, keep these points in mind:
Go to bed 7 to 8 hours before your desired wake-up time and maintain consistent sleep hours. Keep your bedroom as dark, cool, and quiet as possible.
Turn off TVs and computers at least half an hour before bedtime, as electronic light suppresses melatonin production, your body's sleep hormone.Create a gentle evening routine, such as sipping tea, applying lavender oil to your feet, or listening to soothing music.
4. Avoid sleeping on your side
While this position may feel comfortable for babies, it's not ideal for your skin. Similarly, sleeping on your stomach can be harmful as it compresses your abdomen.
Lupo explains:Sleeping with your face pressed into the pillow for eight hours nightly can significantly degrade skin quality over time and accelerate wrinkle formation."
Skin care tip: Practice sleeping on your back. If you wake up on your side or stomach, immediately roll over.
Lupo adds, "Back sleeping minimizes facial skin movement and reduces stretching."
5. Avoid using straws
Do you use straws when drinking dark sodas or coffee to prevent staining white clothes? Or simply because you're too lazy to put your mouth on the can or bottle?
But you might not realize this habit inadvertently creates fine lines around your lips.
Skin care expert, skincare inventor, and celebrity aesthetician to stars like Lisa Rinna and Melissa Lake-Crowe, Renee Rourke explains: "Long-term straw use (or cigarette mouthpieces) adds wrinkles around the mouth."
Skincare tip: Skip the straw. If you must pucker up, save it for kisses!
6. Use the Right Anti-Wrinkle Products
Using cosmetics containing anti-aging ingredients like retinol, peptides, and antioxidants to improve skin quality is perfectly reasonable, but don't waste money on cleansers.
"Many cleansers have anti-aging formulas, but they often contain insufficient amounts and don't stay on the skin long enough to be effective against wrinkles," says Dr. Dee Ann Glaser, MD, Professor of Dermatology at Saint Louis University. Many cleansers claim anti-aging formulas, but they often contain insufficient concentrations and don't stay on skin long enough to deliver wrinkle-reducing benefits."
Skin Care Rule: Opt for basic gentle cleansers like Neutrogena Nightly Nourishing Cleanser, which costs less than anti-wrinkle variants. After cleansing, apply anti-aging moisturizer and allow it time to penetrate deeply.
7. Manage Stress and Relax
Constant worrying and overthinking cause your body to continuously release stress hormones.
"Cortisol, the primary stress hormone, breaks down collagen, leading to sagging skin and inflammation," explains Amy Wexler, MD, a dermatologist and psychiatrist based in New York.
Moreover, when your body is stressed, most nutrients and oxygen are directed to vital organs rather than the skin. Chronic stress and anxiety can lead to deep wrinkles, especially frown lines.
Skin care solution: Find a relaxation method that works for you—watching romantic movies, grabbing coffee with an old friend, taking a yoga class—and make it a regular, consistent practice.
Exercise is also an excellent stress reliever: It boosts blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients to your skin for a radiant complexion.
If none of these work for you, simply taking deep breaths can also help.
8. Don't rely too heavily on sunscreen cosmetics
Many cosmetics claim to contain sunscreen ingredients that block harmful rays, but in reality, they are far from sufficient to prevent skin damage.
Grazer explains: "Most cosmetics protect against UVB rays but offer no defense against UVA rays. UVA rays cause fine lines, brown spots, enlarged pores, and dark circles. Even without UVA protection, you'd need to apply a thick layer of product to achieve adequate coverage."
Skincare tip: Apply a moisturizer that blocks both UVA and UVB rays (look for this on the label) before makeup. Studies show we often miss small areas when applying sunscreen. "So if you apply moisturizer first, then sunscreen, you're more likely to cover those spots you missed the first time," she explains.
9. Don't Focus Only on Wrinkles
Wrinkles aren't the only sign of aging. Dark spots and areas of hyperpigmentation can make your face look dull and aged.
"In fact, skin discoloration like age spots and uneven pigmentation can make women appear ten years older than they actually are," says Dr. Doni, a dermatologist at Monte Carlo in New York.
Skin care solution: Exfoliate (to remove the top layer of dead cells containing melanin) and use brightening products.
Some over-the-counter options may contain licorice root, vitamin C, vitamin K, soy, and phthalic acid. More effective products require a prescription.
Don't forget your sunscreen. UV rays not only trigger more spots but also deepen existing ones on your skin.
10. Don't neglect your neck and hands
Our poor necks and hands rarely get attention, making them among the first body parts to show signs of aging.
In fact, a 2006 study by Plastic Surgery Research Journal found women with spots and wrinkles on their hands were perceived as older than those without.
Skincare tip: Apply a bit of anti-aging face cream to your neck and the backs of your hands—especially areas exposed to daily sun.
11. Don't forget your sunglasses.
"Repeated squinting, laughing, and frowning over time deepens facial wrinkles," says Dawn.
Moreover, direct sunlight breaks down collagen around the eyes and may cause pigmentation.
Skin Care Tip: Even in winter, wear sunglasses with dual UV protection. When purchasing, check for the UV coating label.
12. Avoid washing your face with soap
Your grandparents may have trusted soap as the simplest cleanser, but it often contains harsh detergents that strip away your skin's natural oils.
"While dry, oil-depleted skin doesn't create new wrinkles, it makes existing ones more pronounced," says Professor Grazer of Saint Louis University. "Moreover, dehydrated skin cannot protect itself from antigens like bacteria and viruses, or irritants."
Hydrated skin appears plumper, making wrinkles less noticeable.
Skincare tip: Cleanse with soap-free products (like Dove Cool & Care Foaming Cleanser) followed by moisturizer. Also, drink plenty of water—ideally eight glasses daily—to hydrate skin from the inside out.
