Five methods to conceive twins

I. Find a Husband with Twin Genes:
We all know that the genetic predisposition for conceiving twins primarily lies with the mother. If the mother is a twin, the chance of having twins again is as high as 1.7%, far exceeding that of the father. However, since we have little control over choosing twins, let's focus on what we can do.While the odds of conceiving twins due to the father's twin status are lower, it's still better than nothing!

2. Take Folic Acid
A Swedish medical research institute recently noted that women who take folic acid have nearly double the chance of conceiving twins compared to those who don't.According to reports, Swedish researchers analyzed local pregnant women's medication records since 1994. Among 2,569 women who took folic acid, 2.8% of their births resulted in twins, compared to 1.5% among those who did not take folic acid. Researchers noted that the exact mechanism linking folic acid to increased twin rates remains unclear.Experts speculate that folic acid supplements may increase the frequency of ovulation, allowing multiple eggs to reach the uterus and potentially resulting in twins. Further research is needed to confirm this hypothesis.
Risk Level: Moderate
III. Taking Ovulation-Inducing Drugs
Xinhua News Agency recently published an article titled "Oral Ovulation-Inducing Drugs Increase Chance of Twins," noting that the number of "artificially" conceived twins is rising significantly, a trend that concerns doctors. In reality, ovulation-inducing drugs are primarily used clinically to treat infertility. Self-administering these medications to conceive twins not only harms the mother's health but also jeopardizes the babies' well-being even if twins are born.
While ovulation-inducing drugs do substantially raise twin birth rates, healthy women typically release one egg per month. Forcing the ovaries to release multiple eggs through medication can lead to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, causing symptoms like dizziness, nausea, and impaired liver and kidney function. Without proper medical intervention, this poses significant risks to both mother and child.
Risk Level: Extremely High

IV. Hormone Supplements
A "twin formula" was once widely circulated in Sichuan folk medicine. Research indicates these so-called formulas primarily consist of drugs that stimulate gonadotropin secretion. The primary function of these drugs is to stimulate the anterior pituitary gland to secrete gonadotropins, inducing ovulation. They are also used to treat infertility. If taken improperly by healthy women, they may cause adverse reactions such as abdominal pain, breast tenderness, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, rash, and blurred vision. In severe cases, they may even cause cancer.
Risk Level: Extremely High
V. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
IVF involves stimulating ovarian follicle development through ovulation induction techniques, retrieving eggs for in vitro fertilization, and transferring the resulting embryos into the uterus for gestation.Since this process is medically controlled, multiple eggs are typically fertilized to ensure embryo quality. After reaching a certain stage of development, the best 2–4 embryos are selected for transfer into the uterine cavity. Ultimately, only the strongest embryo is retained to implant and develop within the uterus until birth. However, if a woman's physical condition permits two embryos to develop simultaneously and she requests it, doctors may implant two embryos, resulting in twins. The Ministry of Health has clear regulations on the number of embryos to be implanted: women over 35 may have up to three embryos implanted, while those under 35 are limited to two, aiming to minimize twin or multiple births.
Risk Level: Moderate
Precautions for Expectant Mothers Carrying Twins:
While parents carrying twins may feel joyful, they should also fully recognize that expectant mothers carrying twins face significantly higher rates of common pregnancy illnesses, pregnancy complications, and postpartum diseases compared to single pregnancies. Therefore, these fortunate expectant mothers should pay special attention to the following matters.
1. Ensure adequate and balanced nutrition with easily digestible foods
During twin pregnancies, the mother must provide nutrients for two fetuses. Especially during the mid-to-late stages when fetal growth accelerates, the required nutrients are not only greater in quantity but must also be comprehensive and balanced. Otherwise, due to the increased blood volume in twin pregnancies compared to singleton pregnancies, the mother is prone to anemia, and fetal growth may be compromised. Therefore, expectant mothers should consume sufficient protein, vitamins, and minerals. Focus on eating fish, eggs, milk, lean meat, soy products, fruits, and vegetables. If necessary, iron and calcium supplements may be added. Additionally, morning sickness tends to be more severe during twin pregnancies, so meals should be easily digestible and absorbable. Avoid or minimize spicy and irritating foods.
II. Conduct Prenatal Checkups Diligently and Promptly
Clinically, twin pregnancies are prone to complications such as preeclampsia, premature birth, malpresentation, anemia, gestational hypertension, and polyhydramnios. Particularly in late pregnancy, acute polyhydramnios, premature rupture of membranes, and placenta previa are common. These conditions can adversely affect maternal and fetal health, and in severe cases, threaten the lives of both.Regular prenatal checkups enable early detection of abnormalities, allowing timely intervention to prevent complications.
III. Prevent Premature Birth
Two fetuses developing simultaneously can cause excessive uterine stretching. The uterus often cannot expand sufficiently to accommodate the increased size of twins, making premature birth more common—especially when adequate rest is neglected. Therefore, prioritizing rest is crucial for preventing premature delivery.

IV. Preventing and Treating Anemia
Physiological anemia is common in pregnancy and more pronounced during twin gestation. Increase intake of iron-rich animal foods like pork liver and other organ meats, as well as vegetables such as Chinese cabbage and celery. However, limit spinach consumption, as its tannins can inhibit iron absorption.
V. Prioritize Rest and Early Hospital Admission for Delivery
The uterus expands more rapidly and noticeably in twin pregnancies than in singleton pregnancies, especially after 24 weeks. During late pregnancy, symptoms of compression like palpitations, shortness of breath, lower limb edema, and varicose veins commonly occur.During labor, weak uterine contractions may cause prolonged labor. Premature placental abruption can lead to antepartum hemorrhage. Additionally, excessive uterine stretching, an oversized placenta, or poor postpartum uterine contraction may result in severe postpartum hemorrhage. Therefore, avoid strenuous activity during late pregnancy. After 30 weeks, increased bed rest is recommended. This alleviates compression symptoms, enhances uterine blood flow, promotes fetal weight gain, and helps prevent preterm birth. If possible, expectant mothers should be admitted to the hospital early for delivery. This ensures adequate rest, reduces the risk of preterm birth, and facilitates a smooth delivery. VI. Cesarean Section is Recommended If you are expecting multiples, a cesarean section will be necessary. This is the safest and most straightforward method for delivering multiple babies.
The birth of twins need not differ from that of a singleton—most twin deliveries are straightforward, uncomplicated, and no more painful than delivering one baby. That said, multiple births do carry a higher rate of interventions, increased risks of preterm delivery and smaller birth weight, and may require time in special care units. Cesarean delivery is often more likely due to one or both babies being in less than ideal birth positions.
Breech presentation can sometimes be delivered vaginally, though this carries a risk of causing transverse lie in the second baby. Attempting vaginal delivery for other presentations is generally not advisable. Twin pregnancies are considered high-risk, requiring careful attention. Regular prenatal checkups are essential, and it's crucial to follow your doctor's advice.
