Nose bleeds can stem from various causes, though only a small fraction are linked to serious conditions like blood disorders. Common causes of pediatric nose bleeds include:
1. Poor habits or lack of self-protection skills, such as nose picking, foreign objects, or injuries from falls, blows, or collisions.Bleeding from nose picking is particularly common. Especially during dry weather, children may feel discomfort in their nasal passages and pick their noses. The front part of the nasal cavity has a dense network of capillaries, and trauma from nose picking can damage the nasal mucosa, leading to bleeding. Prolonged presence of foreign objects in the nose can also cause mucosal congestion, erosion, and subsequent bleeding.
2. As autumn and winter arrive, respiratory infections become more prevalent among children, contributing to nosebleeds. For instance, children with allergic rhinitis are prone to nosebleeds. If a child has a predisposition to nosebleeds and has recently experienced a nasal infection, it may result in uncontrollable heavy bleeding.
3. Systemic factors play a role, including bleeding disorders and hematologic diseases (e.g., idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, hemophilia, aplastic anemia), as well as acute febrile infectious diseases (e.g., influenza, measles). Recent studies also suggest a link between pediatric epistaxis and deficiencies in trace elements such as copper, zinc, and iron.small ditches, paddy fields, and puddles. When drinking untreated water containing leeches or swimming/washing in water contaminated with leech excrement, leeches may enter the nasal cavity through the anterior nares, mouth, or nasopharynx and attach to the mucosal surface. Their salivary glands contain anticoagulants, making it difficult for the bite wound to clot.
