With significant temperature fluctuations between day and night lately, we can sense the arrival of autumn and winter. This season marks the peak period for colds, with more people becoming susceptible—some even catching colds every other day. Typically, a sore throat signals an impending cold. You might wake up one morning to unexpectedly severe symptoms. What exactly causes frequent susceptibility to colds?Of course, many know susceptibility stems from weakened immunity. But how exactly does this occur?
1. Weak Constitution Susceptible to Pathogens
Traditional Chinese Medicine views a person with deficient vital energy as having loose, permeable skin and muscles. The slightest carelessness can allow wind pathogens to invade, causing colds.Remember: "When wind pathogens invade, regardless of the point of entry, they ultimately affect the lungs." This is especially true for those with constitutional yang deficiency, yin deficiency, or recovering from illness—re-exposure to wind pathogens can easily trigger colds. 2. Exposure of the Head and Back to Cold Exposing the head and back to cold easily causes colds. The skin on the head is denser than other body parts, with abundant blood and lymph vessels. After vigorous exercise, bathing, or shampooing, the head and back easily perspire.
As body heat evaporates through these areas, exposure to cold allows wind-cold pathogens to penetrate, triggering colds. Regular warmth for the head and back is essential.
3. Excessive Fatigue
Prolonged physical exhaustion weakens immunity and viral resistance, increasing susceptibility to colds.Individuals under significant work pressure should prioritize work-life balance, ensure adequate rest, enhance nutritional intake, and maintain robust immunity to prevent frequent colds. 4. Weakened Immunity When immunity is compromised, even brief exposure to drafts or contact with cold-causing viruses can easily trigger illness. Therefore, daily efforts to boost immunity are crucial. For instance, maintain a balanced diet while incorporating immune-boosting foods, prioritize mental well-being, balance work and rest, and engage in regular physical exercise to strengthen immunity.
Aromatherapy for Colds
The initial stage of cold symptoms presents the optimal window for resistance. Prepare thoroughly with natural antimicrobial and immunity-boosting therapies—essential oils serve as your most effective allies.
Essential oils effective against colds:
Lavender, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Thyme, Rosemary, Pine, Marjoram
Common methods for treating colds:
Bath Therapy
During the initial cold symptoms, immerse your entire body in a bath for 15 minutes. Repeat twice daily—morning and evening—for two to three consecutive days for optimal results.
Morning Bath: 3 drops Tea Tree + 2 drops Eucalyptus + 1 drop Grapefruit + 200ml milk
>Evening bath: 4 drops lavender + 2 drops marjoram + 200ml milk
Inhalation method
Steam inhalation: Place hot water in a container larger than your face and inhale the very hot steam (raise the steam temperature as high as possible without burning your nose or throat). This can inhibit viral growth.Add 2 drops of tea tree or eucalyptus essential oil. Drape a large towel over your head and shoulders. Position your face 5-10 cm above the container and inhale the steam alternately through your mouth and nose. Repeat 2-3 times daily for three consecutive days. Important note: Individuals with asthma should not use this method! Switch to lavender essential oil in the evening.
Gargling Method
For sore throats, prepare an essential oil gargle solution.
Method: Add 1 drop of tea tree or thyme essential oil to 150ml of purified water. Shake well, then gargle with the solution. Repeat 2-3 times daily for 2-3 consecutive days.Important: Never swallow this solution!
Aromatherapy Diffusion
For flu symptoms, use aromatherapy to disinfect the air environment.
Method: Add 2 drops of tea tree oil, plus 1 drop each of eucalyptus and bergamot oil to an aromatherapy burner or diffuser.
Room Spray
Add 100ml purified water and 10 drops tea tree oil to a spray bottle. Secure the cap, shake vigorously, then spray into the air. Shake vigorously again after every 2-3 sprays, as essential oils are insoluble in water.
