Autumn-Winter Home Remedies for Cough Relief and Lung Moisturization
1. Wind-Cold Cough: Daikon Radish with Honey
Main Symptoms: Heavy coughing, itchy throat, thin phlegm, accompanied by headache, nasal congestion, runny nose, chills, and fever.
Daikon radish, with its pungent and sweet flavor, aids in treating various ailments. It regulates qi, transforms phlegm, generates fluids to relieve coughing, and also nourishes the kidneys, boosts qi, and alleviates coughing.
Honey, with its sweet taste, has effects such as tonifying the middle energizer, relieving urgency, moistening the lungs to stop coughing, lubricating the intestines to prevent dryness, detoxifying, and beautifying the complexion. Combined, they form an excellent remedy for relieving cough symptoms.
Method
First, take a white radish, wash it thoroughly, and peel it. Cut the radish into cubes. Take half a bottle of honey and pour the honey over the diced radish.
After two hours, scoop out one tablespoon of this radish-honey mixture and dilute it with warm water. Drink this mixture 4-5 times a day. Cough symptoms should begin to ease the following day. This method also offers some relief for asthma.
2. Roasted Tangerines for Wind-Cold Colds
Eating roasted tangerines helps suppress coughs and eliminate phlegm, primarily due to the tangerine peel. Roasting removes the peel's pungent odor while increasing its active compounds. This process enhances the tangerine's ability to relieve coughs and break up phlegm without affecting taste or nutritional value.
Roasted oranges are particularly effective for coughs caused by wind-cold colds, characterized by: a low-pitched cough, abundant white phlegm, aversion to cold with chilled limbs, and clear nasal discharge.
Method:
Wash oranges and soak in 40°C–50°C (104°F–122°F) water for 3 minutes. Pat dry with a cloth and roast until slightly charred. Consume one orange (with peel) each morning, noon, and evening.(with peel).
3. Steamed Rock Sugar and Snow Pear Juice for Cough Due to Excessive Lung Fire
Pears moisten the lungs, clear heat, generate fluids, and quench thirst. Combined with rock sugar, they enhance the moisturizing and cough-relieving effects. This remedy treats dry coughs without phlegm, dry lips and throat, and is especially suitable for autumn consumption.
Method:
Peel the snow pear, cut off the top, scoop out the core with a spoon, place rock sugar in the center, replace the top, and steam in a steamer for about 30 minutes until ready to eat. Consistency is key—repeat several times to see results.
