Regarding claims that washing hair with birth control pills promotes thick, lustrous hair, some doctors note that sex hormones influence hair health. Estrogen softens hair and enhances shine, while androgens make hair coarse and thick. However, hair health and luster depend not only on genetics but also on balanced hormone levels. Factors influencing hair growth are complex, with hormonal secretion playing the primary role—scalp absorption contributes minimally.
It is true that birth control pills contain estrogen and progesterone. Short-term use may temporarily stimulate hair follicles, accelerating hair metabolism. However, there is no scientific basis for using this method to improve hair quality. Frequent application of hormonal medications over large areas of the scalp can cause skin atrophy, resulting in more harm than good. Therefore, avoid indiscriminate use of emergency contraception.
Young women, especially unmarried ones, should avoid such misuse. Even some balding men who tried this folk remedy developed gynecomastia, growing female-like breasts on their chests. For lustrous, thick hair, regular scalp massage with your hands remains the most practical approach.
