Experts note that soaking feet in hot water can indeed relax muscles and warm the body, but prolonged soaking does more harm than good.
Feet are vital organs reflecting overall health, with over 60 reflex zones in each foot.Yin Zhichao, a researcher at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, illustrates: If a woman's feet are dry, cracked, and flaky, it likely indicates "yin deficiency," requiring increased intake of yin-nourishing foods like wood ear mushrooms and lily bulbs.
Hot foot soaks aren't suitable for everyone. Yin Zhichao emphasizes that certain contraindications exist. For instance, individuals with severe athlete's foot accompanied by blisters should avoid hot water soaks, as this can easily lead to wound infections.
Some people enjoy using electric foot baths for extended periods, sometimes soaking for hours. Generally, a 20-minute soak before bed each day is optimal, preferably not exceeding half an hour. Particularly for the elderly, prolonged soaking can trigger symptoms like excessive sweating and palpitations. Pregnant women should also avoid prolonged hot water foot soaks.
Furthermore, some foot bath devices advertise claims like "cures all ailments," "enhances beauty," "suitable for all ages," and "effective for various herniated discs and other conditions."
Foot baths primarily serve a health maintenance purpose and lack therapeutic efficacy. Furthermore, many users immediately activate the massage function when using foot massagers. Experts emphasize that before foot massage, one must first soak feet in hot water. This accelerates blood circulation, relaxes muscles and ligaments, and prevents injury during massage.
