No contraceptive method is 100% effective; all carry a certain failure rate. Consequently, some women of childbearing age become deeply concerned after unintended pregnancy, fearing fetal abnormalities. So, does contraceptive failure actually cause birth defects?
Some women of childbearing age experience significant anxiety after unintended pregnancy, worrying about potential fetal abnormalities. Does contraceptive failure truly lead to birth defects? This depends on the specific contraceptive method used.
I. Barrier Methods. Vaginal diaphragms and condoms primarily prevent sperm from entering the uterine cavity, thereby preventing sperm from meeting and fertilizing the egg. However, during use, factors like condom or diaphragm breakage or slippage often lead to contraceptive failure and pregnancy.Since sperm and eggs remain undamaged during these contraceptive methods, fetal malformations do not occur. Intrauterine devices (IUDs) primarily alter the uterine environment to inhibit implantation of fertilized eggs, thereby preventing pregnancy.Although the fertilized egg remains unharmed in cases of contraceptive failure, pregnancies with an IUD in place carry higher risks of miscarriage, premature birth, and placental abruption. Additionally, the IUD may become embedded in the fetus, impairing its growth and development. Therefore, from an eugenic perspective, women with an IUD should undergo early termination of pregnancy and IUD removal.
II. Oral Contraceptives and Topical Contraceptives. Oral contraceptives primarily achieve contraception by suppressing ovulation. Since both types are chemically synthesized drugs, pregnancy during use may expose sperm and fertilized eggs to chemical irritation. Therefore, if pregnancy occurs despite contraception, abortion should be performed for eugenic purposes.
III. Fertility Awareness Methods and Withdrawal Method. These methods primarily prevent pregnancy by avoiding sperm-egg encounter. If pregnancy occurs during this period, neither sperm nor egg has been chemically altered, thus posing no risk of fetal abnormalities.
