Adolescence: Toughness and Tenderness Are Equally Important

The countenance of "youth" is clear and delicate—a mere sweep of dark brows suffices to paint a city-captivating radiance. Whether male or female, contestants or idols flashing across TV screens accentuate the essence of "youth" through their gaze, posture, attire, and personality. Yet as we grow adept at calculating youth, its fleeting decade only accelerates its flight amid our calculations.
"Truly endearing idols should embody androgyny," remarked a sociologist in an interview. Naturally, many misinterpret this literally as being neither fully male nor female. Yet a deeper analysis reveals that enviable youth requires "toughness tempered with softness, and strength within gentleness."As the uninvited rites of passage repeatedly wash over us, every child within the realm of "youth" should recognize that "toughness" and "softness" are equally vital.
If youth is defined as the period between 18 and 30, unfolding the memories of the past twelve years reveals countless fragments intertwined with Japanese idol dramas. The 1990s marked the golden age when these dramas flourished and swept across Asia. From Tokyo Love Story, Tokyo Cinderella, Ambitious Youth, Looking Back at Him, Long Vacation, Say You Love Me, Encounter, Lovers, to Moon in the Daytime, Why Meet Again?,Heat at Seventeen, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Transparent World, News Girl, Angel's Love, Beautiful Life, and hundreds more classic Japanese dramas kept us captivated.Youth idols felt like next-door friends, appearing almost weekly on TV or VCD screens. The romantic tales they wove carried the quiet scent of hormones during those budding years of first love.Memories are like that—when you revisit them in the right time and place, they brim with inexhaustible warmth and nostalgia. Yet when you actually rewatch those dusty old dramas or manga today, you start questioning: Were they really that brilliant back then?Yes, these dramas—now tinged with clichés—may not possess the timeless quality to endure for a century. Yet it was precisely the presence of stars like Honami Suzuki, Emi Wakui, Takako Tokiwa, Yuki Matsushita, Tomoko Yamaguchi, Miho Nakayama, Takako Matsu, Namie Amuro, Yuki Uchida, Katsunori Takahashi, Yuji Oda,Taki Shinichi, Takeda Shinji, Toyokawa Etsushi, Eguchi Yosuke, Kishitani Goro, Karasawa Toshiaki, Kimura Takuya, Inagaki Goro, and others, we now have shared memories and gossip to bond over with old classmates.

Whenever I discuss old-school stars with friends who know the entertainment industry inside out, the most common lament is, "If only you knew how wildly popular he/she was across Asia back then." This bittersweet sigh merely reaffirms the timeless truth that "nothing lasts forever." "But what matters most," my friend adds, "is that they shone so brightly during our youth."
Between 1996 and 1999, my youth traversed what we call the "blooming season" and the "rainy season." Even if the "blooming season" brought few dazzling sights, and the "rainy season" wasn't drenched in downpours every day, at least during moments of low spirits, there were countless idol dramas vividly narrating tales beneath the Tokyo Tower. When youthful passion surged in our chests, idols radiating equal fervor blossomed in vibrant colors during campus performances.
Generations born in the 80s and even 90s were profoundly shaped by Japanese and Korean pop culture. Their positioning of "toughness" versus "softness" made us suddenly realize that "masculinity" and "femininity" aren't the only yardsticks for distinguishing genders (though overly effeminate or butch traits fall outside this discussion).Youth should be about "each shining in their own way." Whether one's personality leans toward "toughness" or "softness," it's simply about choosing the most comfortable state to express the fiery glow and vibrancy of youth.
When youth faces setbacks, resilience is the quality our reason demands; when youth plunges into love, tenderness should be the outpouring of our emotions; when youth suffers betrayal, resilience remains the anchor holding our wavering minds steady; when youth confronts challenges, tenderness softens the edges, preventing youth's sharp corners from hurting others."Toughness" is an encouragement, "softness" is a principle. "Toughness" bears the strength to endure sorrow, while "softness" absorbs all melancholy.
The path of youth varies in length, its scenery shaped by each traveler. Whether embraced or resisted, youth is but a passage for all. Mindset may determine its freshness, but inner maturity is the ultimate stage and conclusion of adolescence. Only a fierce youth is worth fighting for; only a softened youth knows how to possess. Whether steel or silk, the difference lies in texture, not in quality. The ancient adage "combining strength with flexibility" cautions us to harmonize and complement fierceness with gentleness. Let the storms of youth rage fiercer still—for youth itself is forged through the exhilarating trials of life.
