Lead is a heavy metal element with neurotoxic properties. It serves no physiological function in the human body and is solely toxic, with an ideal blood concentration of zero. However, due to its widespread presence in the environment, most people have some amount of lead in their bodies. When lead levels exceed certain thresholds, it poses health risks.
Children are particularly vulnerable to lead toxicity due to their metabolic and developmental characteristics. Currently, under the guidance of the "National Research Center for Childhood Lead Poisoning," screening and prevention efforts for urban childhood lead poisoning have been fully implemented in cities like Shanghai, Nanjing, and Beijing. Nevertheless, the severe damage caused by lead poisoning has yet to receive sufficient societal attention or focus from relevant authorities.
Lead poisoning, simply put, is an excess of lead in the blood. Scientific evidence demonstrates that lead can cause damage to multiple organs in the human body: even extremely low concentrations of lead can lead to infertility, miscarriage, and premature birth in women, significantly increasing the rates of stillbirths, birth defects, and children with intellectual disabilities. Lead toxicity easily penetrates the immature blood-brain barrier in children, damaging the brain and resulting in intellectual impairment.Lead toxicity can also interfere with the absorption and metabolism of essential minerals like calcium, zinc, and iron, impairing growth and development.
Furthermore, lead poisoning significantly suppresses the immune system in children, making them highly susceptible to illnesses such as colds, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. It can also induce hypertension, arrhythmia, kidney damage, and psychiatric disorders.
Because lead poisoning causes permanent damage to children's brains, Western countries now regard it as the "number one killer" of childhood intellectual development. They have enacted laws mandating annual blood lead screenings for children, with immediate treatment upon detecting elevated levels.
With China's rapid industrial expansion in recent years and worsening environmental degradation, lead poisoning has become a major threat to children's health. Surveys in numerous Chinese cities reveal that over 50% of children suffer varying degrees of lead exposure, with rates exceeding 85% in some industrial urban areas.
