Zhang San and Li Si were both employed at the same shop, earning identical wages. After some time, for reasons unknown, Zhang San rapidly rose through the ranks—promoted and given raises—while Li Si remained stagnant. Dissatisfied with his boss's perceived unfairness, Li Si finally vented his frustrations to the employer one day.The boss listened patiently while mentally preparing how to explain the differences between him and Zhang San.
"Li Si," the boss began, "go to the market now and see what's being sold this morning."
Shortly after, Li Si returned from the market and reported: "This morning, only one farmer brought a cartload of potatoes to sell."
"How many?" the boss asked. Li Si hadn't asked, so he quickly put on his hat and dashed back to the market. Returning, he told the boss, "Forty sacks of potatoes in total."
"And the price?" the boss pressed.
"You didn't ask me to check the price," Li Si protested, looking aggrieved.
"Very well," the boss continued. "Now sit down on this chair. Stay quiet and listen to what others say."The boss then summoned Zhang San and instructed him, "Zhang San, go to the market now and see what's being sold this morning."
Zhang San also returned quickly from the market. He reported to the boss in one breath: "Only one farmer is selling potatoes at the market today—40 sacks total, priced at twenty-five cents per pound.I inspected them—good quality and cheap. So I brought one back for you to see."
Zhang San pulled a potato from his bag as he spoke. "At this price, we can definitely turn a profit. Based on our sales history, 40 sacks would sell out in about a week. I even brought the farmer along—he's waiting outside for your decision."
The boss then turned to Li Si and said, "Now do you understand why Zhang San earns more than you?"
Li Si was speechless.
Insight
Every business urgently needs proactive, responsible employees. Outstanding workers don't passively wait for tasks to be assigned; they take the initiative to understand their responsibilities, plan effectively, and then give their all to complete the work.
The problem lies in those who consistently lack initiative in their work. They treat themselves like machines, afraid to step out of line or think independently. Even when they notice flaws in their leader's instructions, they still carry out their "assigned" tasks according to the flawed plan. When problems arise, they shift all blame onto their superiors—arguing, "This was the leader's arrangement. I merely followed my superior's instructions, so I bear no responsibility."This reflects a lack of accountability and initiative. Such irresponsibility and passive work attitudes often stem from a flawed understanding of work's value. If someone mentally views their job as merely working for others, they cannot be proactive or responsible, and will never earn their boss's recognition. In reality, the meaning of work extends far beyond earning a paycheck. More importantly, through our work, we continuously enhance our professional knowledge, accumulate rich work experience, and develop interpersonal skills. These assets profoundly benefit our entire lives and career success, holding value millions of times greater than the salary we receive.Placing excessive emphasis on salary—believing one should only work for what they're paid—actually obscures personal growth and squanders opportunities for development. This is the true cost. With this awareness, we naturally cultivate an inner drive and boundless motivation to proactively excel in every task.
Don't fret over lack of recognition or constantly feel underappreciated. Trust that "gold will always shine"—true talent will inevitably earn the boss's trust. As long as you take steady steps, diligently handling every task at hand, opportunity will surely present itself.
