For busy office workers, evening is the optimal time for exercise. Often, they prefer to work out after dinner, enjoying the cool night breeze. However, some rush to exercise immediately after eating. Not only does this fail to deliver exercise benefits, but it can also harm the body.
Drawbacks of exercising immediately after meals:
A full stomach during exercise causes gastrointestinal vibrations, stretching the mesentery connecting the stomach and intestines, leading to abdominal pain.
Blood redistribution from the digestive tract to skeletal muscles during exercise causes intestinal ischemia, triggering smooth muscle spasms in the gastrointestinal tract and resulting in abdominal pain.
Increased systemic oxygen demand during exercise, combined with low lung capacity in the unfit, often results in shallow, rapid breathing. This reduces intrathoracic negative pressure, obstructing hepatic blood return. Consequently, hepatic congestion and increased tension on the liver capsule cause liver pain, manifesting as right upper quadrant discomfort.
Other gastrointestinal disorders, including appendicitis, may flare up during post-meal exercise.
How long after eating should one wait before exercising?
Exercise immediately after eating is inadvisable. Post-meal digestion diverts significant blood flow to the stomach. Immediate activity may cause gastric discomfort and impaired digestion.
It's best to rest for about 20 minutes after eating before gradually increasing activity. Moderate exercise, such as a slow walk, is generally recommended 30-40 minutes post-meal to aid digestion.
Therefore, avoid exercising immediately after eating. Wait until food has been partially digested in the stomach and intestines before engaging in gentle activities to prevent placing undue strain on the digestive system.
