Many people experience knee soreness after exercise, and most simply apply some liniment and call it a day. However, due to the complex structure of joints, issues with ligaments or cartilage that aren't addressed promptly can worsen over time, potentially leading to irreversible damage.
Knee pain from running—which type do you have?
First, to treat the condition effectively, you must identify its cause. Running-induced knee pain stems from various sources, but the three most common are: osteoarthritis, patellar chondromalacia, and runner's knee (iliotibial band syndrome).
If you experience pain at the knee joint itself, you can perform some simple self-tests (though for other symptoms or severe cases, consult a doctor~), as the pain points differ for each condition.
Osteoarthritis pain is located in the joint space between the bones of the knee. It often manifests as discomfort when pressure is applied to the knee while standing upright. Sometimes, arthritis can also cause swelling and pain.

Pain from patellar chondromalacia occurs beneath the small protrusion above the knee joint (the patella itself). Iliotibial band syndrome, also known as runner's knee, has a different pain location than the above two conditions, primarily on the outer side of the knee joint. Functional Training to Enhance Knee Stability For example, lie flat on your back with knees straight and perform straight-leg raises without weight-bearing.If no significant knee pain occurs, use a sandbag made from old clothing placed on the top of the foot to perform straight-leg weight-bearing lifts.

For example, hold onto the back of a chair while standing and perform horse stance squats.Initially, maintain a fixed knee height without bending. Gradually increase knee flexion only after confirming no adverse reactions. This effectively accelerates muscle blood flow.

Activities like deep squats that involve repetitive knee bending should be avoided by those with knee discomfort, as they accelerate joint wear.Avoid prolonged running, jumping, or squatting, and minimize or avoid stair climbing. 5. The tensor fascia lata is connected to the iliotibial band, and many cases of lateral knee pain stem from iliotibial band issues. There are various ways to exercise thigh muscles, such as lunges, squats, stair climbing, and wall sits.
