What are the symptoms of anemia in women? Women are prone to anemia due to monthly blood loss. Without adequate supplementation, anemia can lead to fainting. Below are six common symptoms of anemia. If you experience any of these, ensure timely energy replenishment and blood-building measures.
Symptoms of Anemia in Women
1. Nutritional Anemia
Nutritional anemia primarily results from severe iron deficiency, followed by anemia caused by vitamin B2 deficiency.
Causes: Many women excessively restrict their diets, avoiding meat, eggs, and milk, and even consuming minimal vegetable oils. Long-term reliance on plant-based foods like greens and radishes can lead to anemia.
Symptoms: In addition to general anemia symptoms like dizziness, tinnitus, blurred vision, fatigue, and dry, brittle hair, patients may also experience loss of appetite, diarrhea, mouth ulcers, and glossitis.
2. Iron-Deficiency Anemia
Iron-deficiency anemia refers to a type of microcytic hypochromic anemia caused by insufficient iron stores in the body, which impairs hemoglobin synthesis. It is the most common form of anemia worldwide, including in China. The incidence of this disease is extremely high, affecting nearly every region globally.
Causes: Iron is a crucial trace element for hematopoiesis, and dietary iron deficiency is the primary cause of anemia.Additionally, hookworm infection, gastrointestinal malabsorption, bleeding from gastric or duodenal ulcers, hemorrhoidal bleeding, menorrhagia in women, and functional uterine bleeding during adolescence can all lead to iron deficiency anemia.
Symptoms: Similar to those of nutritional anemia, but can be differentiated through trace element testing of hair.
The most common cause of anemia, classified as acute or chronic. Chronic blood loss often leads to iron deficiency anemia; acute hemorrhagic anemia results from massive blood loss over a short period due to vascular rupture from trauma or disease, or defects in the hemostatic mechanism.
Causes:
Severe functional uterine bleeding (metrorrhagia);
Ectopic pregnancy, placenta previa, or major obstetric hemorrhage during childbirth;
Major bleeding from sexual trauma;
Massive hemoptysis from bronchiectasis or lung tumors;
Hematemesis due to ruptured esophageal varices from peptic ulcer disease or liver disease;
Bleeding from surgical trauma or during surgical procedures.
Symptoms: If blood loss reaches 1500–2000 milliliters (approximately 40% of total blood volume), even previously healthy patients will experience thirst, nausea, shortness of breath, extreme dizziness, or brief loss of consciousness despite bed rest. Due to circulatory redistribution, patients exhibit cold extremities, pallor, and decreased urine output.Blood pressure, cardiac output, and central venous pressure all decrease. The pulse becomes rapid and weak, gradually progressing to shock symptoms such as restlessness, difficulty breathing, a weak and rapid pulse, cold and clammy skin, nausea and vomiting, and ultimately unconsciousness.
