Corrected Age = Actual Age in Months - (40 - Gestational Age at Birth) / 4.Example: For a baby born at only 32 weeks gestation who is now 3 months old, the corrected age = 3 - (40 - 32) / 4 = 1 month. At this point, the child's height, weight, and head circumference can be compared to the 1-month-old section of the normal infant growth chart. Corrected age is used until the child reaches 24 months (2 years).
Auditory and Visual Development
Before discharge, the hospital should have conducted the first hearing screening for the preterm infant. Parents must ask the doctor for the results. If the screening was unsuccessful, a follow-up test should be scheduled as directed by the doctor. Even if the screening was successful, parents should observe the child's response to sounds. Premature infants often develop immature retinal blood vessels, a condition known as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Regular check-ups with physicians experienced in guiding child growth and development are crucial for early detection, intervention, and correction.Provided the child shows no signs of intracranial hemorrhage, congenital brain developmental abnormalities, or other genetic/severe traumatic brain injuries within the first month of life, and receives regular medical guidance, their behavioral development should not differ significantly from that of full-term infants.
Social Skills
Due to their premature birth, parents often provide extra care and protection.
