Upon detecting a musty odor in your comforter, first remove the duvet cover and expose the inner comforter to direct sunlight. Gently tap the comforter with a small stick to dislodge mold spores. Wash the duvet cover thoroughly and air-dry it in the sun to eliminate any lingering odor. The ultraviolet rays in sunlight effectively kill mold. Tapping the quilt with a wooden stick helps dislodge mold particles. If the quilt filling is severely contaminated, consider replacing it entirely. How to Clean Mold Stains from Duvet Covers 1. Soak the duvet in rice-washing water overnight, then wash it thoroughly as usual to remove mold stains.
2. Scrub moldy areas with a soft brush, then wipe with alcohol to remove stains.
3. Rub mold spots with mung bean sprouts, rinse with clean water to eliminate stains.
4. For stubborn mold, wipe with bleach or a 35-60°C hydrogen peroxide solution, then wash thoroughly.
5. For mold stains on cotton or linen duvet covers, soak in a diluted solution of 20ml ammonia per liter of water, then rinse thoroughly. For silk, wool, or paper products, dab with a cotton ball soaked in turpentine, then air-dry in direct sunlight.
Causes of Quilt Mold Growth
1. Storing quilts in damp, warm environments allows them to absorb moisture, which promotes mold growth or insect egg development.
2. Quilts stored without prior airing. Nighttime perspiration and ambient humidity cause quilts to absorb moisture continuously. Storing damp quilts promotes mold growth.
How to Prevent Quilt Mold
1. Wash and air-dry quilts before storage. Avoid prolonged sun exposure. Let quilts cool completely after use before packing to prevent moisture buildup.
2. Use breathable cotton-linen storage bags or quilt covers that block dust. Non-breathable packaging will cause mold.
3. Do not place desiccants or mothballs inside the storage bag with the quilt; these should be placed in the storage cabinet instead. Store the quilt at the top of the wardrobe, with no clothing placed on top to prevent loss of elasticity and reduced warmth retention.
