Fructus Sterculiae is sweet and bland in taste, slightly cold in nature, and enters the Lung and Large Intestine meridians. Its effects are relatively singular: clearing lung heat, moistening lung dryness, benefiting the throat, and lubricating the intestines. It is a common herb for lung-related conditions, especially throat ailments. Fructus Sterculiae can be used both medicinally and as food. Many people steep it as a tea substitute to prevent and treat throat swelling and pain.
Its specific applications can be summarized as follows:
For throat ailments
Throat swelling and pain often result from throat heat toxins or excessive lung heat. Treatment should focus on clearing throat heat toxins and purging lung heat. Pang Da Hai's cool nature acts on the lung meridian, excelling at clearing throat heat and purging lung heat, making it highly suitable for treating throat swelling and pain.Whether used alone as a tea infusion or combined with other heat-clearing, toxin-eliminating, and throat-soothing herbs, it proves highly effective. Pang Da Hai not only clears throat heat but also excels at restoring vocal clarity. It effectively treats hoarseness and even loss of voice, proving beneficial for both acute and chronic conditions.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, vocal production is primarily regulated by the lungs. When lung qi is abundant, lung yin is nourishing, and the lungs' dispersing function is normal, the voice is resonant, clear, moist, and sustained. Conversely, whether due to external pathogens invading the lungs, impaired lung qi dispersion, lung qi deficiency, or lung yin deficiency leading to throat malnutrition, vocal disorders arise—ranging from hoarseness to complete loss of voice.Pang Da Hai, with its sweet and cold properties, moistens the lungs, benefits the throat, and enhances vocal projection. It can be combined with other herbs to treat hoarseness or loss of voice regardless of the underlying cause. For instance: - Combined with licorice to treat throat swelling and pain - Combined with cicada slough to treat voice loss due to impaired lung qi dispersion - Combined with astragalus and codonopsis to treat hoarseness or voice loss due to lung qi deficiency - Combined with ophiopogon and scrophularia to treat hoarseness or voice loss due to lung yin deficiency
For lung heat and lung dryness coughs
Coughs with yellow, sticky phlegm caused by wind-heat invading the lungs or pathogenic heat obstructing the lungs; dryness pathogens injuring the lungs, lung failure to moisten and descend, or lung yin deficiency leading to dry cough with little or no phlegm. Pang Da Hai can both clear lung heat and moisten lung dryness, thus treating lung heat or lung dryness coughs. However, this effect of Pang Da Hai is not pronounced and requires combination with other herbs. For lung-heat coughs, it is paired with lung-clearing and cough-relieving herbs like Scutellaria baicalensis, Houttuynia cordata, and Phragmites root. For lung-dryness coughs, it is combined with Trichosanthes root, Ophiopogon japonicus, and Loquat leaf.
For Constipation
As a cold-natured herb entering the Large Intestine Meridian, Sterculia lychnophora clears intestinal heat and promotes bowel movements. It is thus suitable for constipation or difficult defecation caused by heat accumulation in the large intestine. However, its laxative effect is mild, making it appropriate only for mild cases and requiring combination with other purgative herbs.
Given its cold nature, excessive use may damage the body's yang energy, particularly impairing spleen and stomach function, leading to side effects like abdominal pain and diarrhea. Therefore, stop taking Pang Da Hai once relief is achieved; it should not be consumed long-term as a health beverage or tea.Individuals with pre-existing spleen-stomach deficiency-cold—manifesting as poor appetite, abdominal cold pain, preference for warmth and pressure, and loose stools—should exercise caution when using Sterculia lychnophora. Additionally, women should avoid it during menstruation.
