Nasolabial folds not only affect one's appearance but also one's demeanor, making a person appear stern and unapproachable. How can these folds be reduced? Let's explore the solutions below.
Experts explain that the formation of nasolabial folds is directly linked to age, though facial expressions and genetic predisposition also play significant roles. Many young individuals are affected by these folds, often developing deep lines extending downward from the outer edges of the nostrils due to habitual pursing of the lips.
Causes of Nasolabial Folds
1. Innate Factors
In younger individuals, nasolabial folds are often due to skeletal structure rather than sagging soft tissue.
2. Skin Aging and Sagging
While some individuals naturally develop deeper nasolabial folds than others, generally speaking, these lines gradually deepen after age 35. Beyond genetic factors, aging is the primary cause. As we age, collagen and moisture content in the skin gradually diminish, while subcutaneous fat atrophies and sags. This leads to skin laxity and aging, creating surface depressions that form nasolabial folds—a common cause. 3. Expressive Facial Habits If nasolabial folds extend from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth, they likely result from frequent smiling. If nasolabial folds extend downward from the corners of the mouth, it stems from frequently pursing or pouting the lips.
Preventing Nasolabial Folds
Use the tip of your tongue to massage the acupoints inside your lips in a clockwise direction, moving from left to right and up to down, repeating this at least three times.
1. Begin massaging with the tongue tip on the upper lip.
2. Move the tongue tip to the right side of the lip.
3. Then shift the tongue tip to the left side of the lip.
4. Finally, move the tongue tip to the lower lip.
5. Pucker your cheeks as if rinsing your mouth, with the tongue positioned under the lower lip.
3. Move the tip to the left side of the lips.
4. Finally, move the tip to the lower lip.
5. Puff out both cheeks as if gargling, then move the tongue inside the mouth to press against both cheeks. Perform each action five times consecutively, four times daily.
