Pros and Cons of Injectable vs. Surgical Nose Augmentation

Oriental noses are naturally flatter, and combined with wider faces, this can make the distance between the eyes appear greater and the overall facial contour lack dimensionality. Rhinoplasty not only makes the nose appear straighter but also refines the facial shape. It is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures among Asians, second only to double eyelid surgery. Those seeking rhinoplasty have two primary options: surgical rhinoplasty, involving the insertion of implants or autologous cartilage; or injectable rhinoplasty, using hyaluronic acid, collagen, or Aibei Fu fillers.
I. Surgical Rhinoplasty
In surgical rhinoplasty, incisions are made in concealed areas. After creating a surgical space, the implant or autologous cartilage is inserted and secured.
Advantages: The specific area, length, height, and width of the nose can be precisely controlled. During surgery, issues such as overly wide nostrils, a large nasal tip, flared nostrils, or a hump nose can be addressed.
Disadvantages:
(1) Autologous cartilage sources (e.g., septal or auricular cartilage) are limited and challenging to sculpt, while synthetic implants may carry rejection risks.
(2) Implant-based augmentation may appear artificial, shift position, or degrade over time.
(3) Patients also face unforeseeable surgical risks: bleeding, infection, bruising, swelling, etc.
Advantages include:
(1) Virtually no recovery period. If hyaluronic acid is used, it can be dissolved with an enzyme at any time to restore the original appearance.
(2) It can address subtle nasal imperfections that are difficult to correct with traditional rhinoplasty.
(3) Serves as a transitional step before rhinoplasty surgery, allowing testing of shape and height while enabling the patient and others to adjust to the new appearance.
Disadvantages:
(1) Fillers may shift. Achieving height exceeding 0.5 cm is challenging, and no amount of manipulation can replicate the firm projection of surgical rhinoplasty.
