Childhood anxiety disorder is a relatively common emotional disturbance. It manifests as unexplained tension, fear, and restlessness in children without obvious triggers. This condition can lead to sleep disturbances, gastrointestinal discomfort, school refusal, learning difficulties, social challenges, and numerous other issues.
Due to young children's limited verbal expression and the willfulness often seen in only children, they frequently display tantrums, reluctance to visit unfamiliar places, crying, nervousness, and other behaviors. Parents and family members rarely associate these with "pathology," making early detection difficult.So how can parents distinguish between occasional moodiness and genuine signs of anxiety?
Characteristics of childhood anxiety:
1. Irritability, frequent crying or fussiness, and difficulty being soothed or cared for;
2. Reluctance to leave parents, feeling anxious or fearful at kindergarten, experiencing sudden bouts of tension or terror;
3. The most prominent feature is a lack of security and inner restlessness;
4. Noticeably timid compared to peers, easily frightened in many situations or plagued by ominous feelings of impending doom, with acute episodes reaching panic levels;
5. Difficulty falling asleep at night, restless sleep, frequent nightmares;
6. School-aged children around six or seven refuse to attend school; even when compelled to go, they rarely interact with classmates or teachers;
7. Inattention during class, excessive fidgeting, poor academic performance, and instances of truancy or skipping school;
8. Children with severe cases may experience loss of appetite and autonomic nervous system dysfunction, such as rapid breathing, chest tightness, palpitations, accelerated heart rate, dizziness, sweating, flushing, dry mouth, cold extremities, constipation, urinary urgency, and frequent urination.
The above points represent common clinical manifestations of childhood anxiety disorders, though specific symptoms vary among affected children. Therefore, when a child exhibits suspected symptoms or parents suspect anxiety disorder, avoid jumping to conclusions to prevent adverse effects on the child.
