1. Can fish hot springs transmit HIV?
The probability of contracting HIV through fish hot springs is extremely low. Hepatitis and HIV are transmitted through blood contact, requiring both the carrier and the healthy individual to have open wounds that come into direct contact while bleeding. The fish in hot springs are generally too small to break human skin, and individuals with existing skin injuries typically avoid hot spring bathing. However, maintaining hygiene precautions while bathing is advisable.
HIV transmission primarily occurs through sexual contact and the exchange of bodily fluids. Key fluids include semen, blood, vaginal secretions, breast milk, cerebrospinal fluid, and brain tissue from individuals with neurological symptoms. Other fluids like tears, saliva, and sweat contain minimal viral quantities and generally do not transmit HIV. The likelihood of HIV transmission via saliva is extremely low.Mother-to-child transmission, also known as perinatal transmission, occurs when an HIV-infected mother passes the virus to her fetus or infant before birth, during delivery, or shortly after birth. Transmission can occur through the placenta, during passage through the birth canal, or via breastfeeding.
In public bathhouses with hot springs, the presence of flowing water and steam makes HIV transmission impossible. For regular bathing, this is even less likely—even if someone were bleeding heavily, the water would be completely diluted, and sufficient heat would destroy the virus. If transmission occurred under such conditions, every bathhouse and hot spring nationwide would likely have to close. Stay calm.
3. Ways HIV cannot be transmitted
Air; drinking water or food; routine work or daily contact; swimming pools; blood-sucking insects like mosquitoes, fleas, or lice (no blood-sucking insects have been found to transmit HIV); caring for HIV-positive individuals with proper protection; squat toilets or urinals.
