Mineral water increases baby's kidney burden
Commercial mineral water is formulated for adults, with elemental content and ratios unsuitable for infants. Long-term, excessive consumption can strain a baby's kidneys. Since infant kidneys are still developing, severe cases may cause hematuria and increase the risk of kidney stones.
Furthermore, certain elements in mineral water may be harmful to infants. Long-term use of mineral water for formula preparation can cause digestive issues like indigestion, loss of appetite, and constipation, while also hindering the absorption of milk nutrients. Additionally, consuming mineral water with high sodium content may impact brain development.
Tap water is the best choice for preparing infant formula.
Beyond mineral water, commonly used purified water is also unsuitable for formula preparation. Purified water lacks essential trace minerals and, when excreted, may flush out beneficial minerals and trace elements from the body.Long-term consumption of purified water reduces intake of beneficial elements like fluoride, whereas the moderate fluoride content in tap water helps lower infant tooth decay rates.
Therefore, whether preparing formula or providing drinking water, ordinary tap water—boiled and cooled—is the optimal choice.
Proper Formula Preparation Method
1. Prepare all utensils
Gather all dedicated items—bottles, nipples, bottle caps, scoop, bottle tongs, bottle brush, kettle, sterilizer—and thoroughly clean and sterilize them.When sterilizing with boiling water, submerge all items completely and boil for 5-10 minutes, with nipples sterilized for 3 minutes. 2. Keep the nipple constantly filled with milk during feeding. After feeding, help your baby burp by holding them upright facing you, with their chin resting on your shoulder. Gently stroke the middle of their back from bottom to top or lightly pat their back to release trapped air.
Common Mistakes in Formula Preparation
1. Using Boiling Water for Infant Formula
Based on daily habits, adults often use boiling water to dissolve powdered milk, soy milk powder, or juice powder, believing it speeds up dissolution. Consequently, many new parents mistakenly assume boiling water is also needed for infant formula. Some even think high temperatures sterilize the formula, ensuring the baby's health and safety.
In reality, boiling water must never be used for infant formula. Infant formula contains rich proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins A and D, and trace elements like calcium and iron. Boiling water's high temperature causes whey protein in the formula to form clumps, impairing the child's digestion and absorption. Heat-sensitive vitamins are also destroyed, especially in formulas fortified with immune-boosting substances, where the activity of these immune components is compromised.
2. Adding powder before water
This is the most common preparation error. Out of habit, most people pour powdered formula into a cup or bowl before adding water. However, infant formula should never be prepared this way. The correct sequence is to measure the exact amount of lukewarm water first, then add the corresponding amount of powder according to the mixing ratio.
Each formula has a specific mixing ratio. If powder is added first and water is then poured up to the marked level, the milk becomes too concentrated. Conversely, adding water first and then powder may cause some overflow but results in the correct concentration. Consuming overly concentrated milk can overwhelm an infant's digestive system and strain their kidneys.
3. Overly Concentrated Formula
Every infant formula clearly states its mixing ratio on the packaging, typically formatted as "N milliliters of warm water plus n scoops of formula," requiring the use of the formula's own dedicated measuring scoop.
However, many parents believe that formula prepared according to the instructions is too thin and won't satisfy their baby's hunger, so they arbitrarily make it much more concentrated.The most common consequence of this practice is constipation and overheating in babies. In severe cases, it can cause ruptures in the capillaries of the infant's brain, leading to bleeding and ultimately affecting the baby's intellectual development. This occurs because formula contains sodium ions, which require sufficient boiled water to dilute properly. If the formula is too concentrated, it increases pressure on the blood vessel walls, eventually causing capillary ruptures and bleeding.
4. Using Mineral Water to Prepare Formula
The water used to prepare infant formula is important, but some parents take this too far. They choose mineral water or purified water for the formula, which is incorrect.
Mineral water is rich in minerals, including excessive phosphates and calcium phosphates. Since infants' digestive systems are still developing, prolonged use of mineral water to prepare formula can cause digestive issues and constipation.
Purified water lacks the mineral elements found in regular tap water. Since the human body can absorb over 90% of calcium from water, purified water is also unsuitable for preparing infant formula.
5. Vigorous shaking or stirring of the bottle
Formula is typically prepared directly in the bottle. After adding the correct amount of powder to water, gentle shaking helps dissolve the powder evenly and prevent clumping.However, many parents shake the bottle too vigorously—moving it up, down, side to side, and back and forth—which creates numerous air bubbles. When the baby drinks this, they may burp constantly afterward.
