If high income is seen as a marker of career success, then "macho" men may have a greater chance of achieving it.A recent U.S. study found that men who believe women belong in the kitchen rather than the workplace earn significantly more than their more moderate counterparts, with an average annual income gap of $8,500. These findings were published in the latest issue of Applied Psychology. Preserving the Privileges of the EstablishedQuestions included: Do you believe women should stay at home? Do you believe women entering the workforce likely increases juvenile delinquency? Do you believe women should take care of the family? Researchers found that while the gap in views between male and female respondents on these issues narrowed significantly over two decades, far more men than women answered "yes" to all three questions.In 2005, when researchers examined male respondents' incomes, another disparity emerged. Men holding "macho" views earned substantially more than those with more egalitarian perspectives. The researchers noted that even after accounting for factors like education, job complexity, and working hours, assertive men still earned more than their more moderate counterparts.Timothy Zachy of the University of Florida suggested a possible explanation: In traditional societies, male supremacists dominated the workplace and were the primary breadwinners. In modern society, as the established beneficiaries, this group strives to maintain that continuity.Employers favor promoting men who are sole breadwinners. Magdalena Chávez, a psychologist at the University of Winchester in the UK, suggests several explanations for the income gap between "macho" and non-macho men. First, men who adhere to traditional gender roles—where men work outside the home and women manage household duties—tend to be power-oriented and highly motivated to accumulate resources (such as money).Additionally, theories suggest employers favor promoting men who are sole breadwinners as a form of support for the entire household.
