A decayed tooth requires filling. Otherwise, it not only affects aesthetics but also impairs chewing function. Tooth decay occurs when the hard tooth structure undergoes demineralization, softening, and destruction, eventually forming cavities. When the decay is shallow and asymptomatic, filling treatment is straightforward—simply filling the cavity is sufficient.
Without timely treatment, the decay worsens progressively—deepening and expanding—leading to sensitivity to cold, heat, acid, or sweet foods.
When decay reaches the pulp, it causes pulpitis, requiring more complex treatment. This involves first killing the nerve before filling the tooth—a procedure known as "root canal therapy."
At this stage, severe tooth pain occurs. If left untreated, the decay may progress further, leading to apical periodontitis, apical abscesses, and even tooth loosening, loosening, or loss.
Filling treatment becomes more time-consuming and costly. The necrotic nerve tissue must be removed from the pulp chamber, which is then filled with medication before the cavity is sealed. This procedure is known as "root canal therapy."
Dental fillings primarily address two types of dental lesions: one is cavities, scientifically known as dental caries; the other is small-scale tooth defects caused by wedge-shaped defects or trauma.For cavities, treatment varies based on severity and typically includes options like composite fillings, root canal therapy, or cosmetic crowns. Important Considerations for Dental Fillings
1. If your tooth has undergone root canal therapy (pulpectomy), it loses the nourishment from the pulp, resulting in reduced strength. Avoid chewing excessively hard foods to prevent fracture. If necessary, follow your dentist's advice to promptly receive a metal crown restoration to prevent tooth fracture.
2. If your tooth experiences pain from cold, hot, acidic, or sweet stimuli, seek prompt dental care to prevent progression to pulpitis.
3. After receiving an amalgam filling, avoid chewing with the treated tooth for 24 hours to prevent filling dislodgement. Amalgam fully hardens and stabilizes after 24 hours.
4. For teeth with extensive decay and large cavities, the restored tooth structure may lack sufficient strength and be prone to fracture during chewing. Therefore, for such teeth, a protective crown should be placed promptly after filling, as advised by your dentist, to prevent tooth fracture.
5. Follow your dentist's instructions and avoid chewing food or hard objects with the newly filled tooth. It is generally advisable to wait until the second or third day after filling before chewing on the affected side to prevent tooth fracture or filling material dislodgement.
6. If the affected tooth requires root canal treatment (nerve removal), please attend your appointments punctually to avoid damage to deeper tissues, such as apical periodontitis or even jawbone osteomyelitis.
7. If mild pain occurs after filling, self-monitor first. Some minor discomfort or pain may resolve on its own. However, if pain worsens, or if you experience bite pain, throbbing pain, sensitivity to hot/cold stimuli, or spontaneous nighttime pain, promptly return to the hospital for re-examination and treatment to identify the cause and eliminate the pain.
